Mon Jan 07, 2019 2:07 pm

There are 30 flights around the world from 1974 (important to me), of which I have only the flight number. Does anyone knows the type of aircraft and the airlines (and perhaps registration)?

These are the flights (Date, Time, flight -nr, Dep/Arr):

PA812 and 824 were 707 operated
The late 1973 PA timetable has the PA Caracas/Rio flight as either 441 or 515, both 707 operated
WA637 was DC-10 "Spaceship" operated
QF586 Would have been one of the three "Fiesta Routes", all 707 operated:
Sydney – Nadi – Papeete – Acapulco – Mexico City
Sydney – Nadi – Papeete – Acapulco – Mexico City – Nassau – Bermuda – London
Sydney – Nadi – Papeete – Vancouver

WA560 HNL-LAX would have been either a Boeing 707 or 720 according to departedflights.com

On this same topic, but more detailed: I am trying to determine which of the four CP Air B747's I flew on on July 17, 1974 from YYZ-YVR. They only had the one daily as far as I know, it was a combi operating on a morning leg. I have no idea where I'd find this except the logbook of the now-scrapped aircraft so just reaching out for ideas...

All KU flights in 1974 were operated by B707-300C aircraft.

Thank you so much!

06 March 1974 11:40 OS871 Vienna/Athens - DC-9-30 & possibly the short term DC-8-63 they leased (seen in Hong Kong)
06 March 1974 16:00 RJ132 Athens/Amman - Most likely was under the ALIA Royal Jordanian Airlines moniker - 707 & 727
11 March 1974 08:45 ME311 Amman/Beirut - most certainly a 720
12 March 1974 11:10 MS701 Beirut/Cairo - Most likely a 707 or 737-200
15 March 1974 14:00 KU542 Cairo/Kuwait - Most likely a 707 and/or 727-200
19 March 1974 00:15 KU260 Kuwait/Abu Dhabi - Most likely a 727-200
20 March 1974 00:05 AI802 Abu Dhabi/Bombay - Most likely a 707
22 March 1974 20:00 IC406 Bombay/Delhi - Most likely a 737-200
26 March 1974 14:40 TG304 Delhi/Dacca - Most likely a SUD Caravelle or DC-9-30
28 March 1974 08:30 BG491 Dacca/Calcutta - Most likely a 707or 720
29 March 1974 07:55 SK985 Calcutta/Bangkok - certainly a DC-8-62
02 April 1974 18:00 TG602 Bangkok/Hong Kong - Most likely a DC-8-33 to DC-8-62 (this service continued to TPE-SEL & TPE-OSA
03 April 1974 17:45 VN784 Hong Kong/Saigon - one of VN's 3 727-100s but periodically the one 707 performed the task
04 April 1974 16:30 SQ613 Saigon/Singapore - SQ had the 727-200 & 737-200 for this but could have subbed a 707 on occasion
05 April 1974 17:45 SQ208 Singapore/Jakarta - had to be a mix of 707, 727-200 & 737-200
06 April 1974 23:30 PA812 Jakarta/Sydney - definitely a 707 service
07 April 1974 20:30 TN497 Sydney/Canberra - definitely a 727-100 or 737-200
10 April 1974 07:10 TN422 Canberra/Sydney - see above
10 April 1974 09:00 QF850 Sydney/Auckland - 747-200 or 707
11 April 1974 20:30 TE556 Auckland/Nadi - DC-8-55
12 April 1974 16:25 QF586 Nadi/Papeete - 707 or 747-200
15 April 1974 14:20 PA824 Papeete/Honolulu - 707 possibly 747-121
16 April 1974 23:35 WA560 Honolulu/Los Angeles - 707 for sure
17 April 1974 16:30 WA637 Los Angeles/Mexico City - 707 & 720
20 April 1974 12:50 VA781 Mexico City/Caracas - DC-8-55 to DC-8-63
22 April 1974 15:20 PA217 Caracas/Rio de Janeiro - 747 most likely but DC-8 or 707 possible
24 April 1974 23:50 SR205 Rio de Janeiro/Dakar - DC-8-62
27 April 1974 07:35 AZ1553 Dakar/Rome - DC-8-62
27 April 1974 16:30 LN121 Rome/Tripoli - 707 or 727-200 most likely a combo
30 April 1974 16:20 SR241 Tripoli/Zurich - DC-8-62

As for your CP Air 747-200, unfortunately the only existing printed record are carrier dispatch records (records of fleet movements) locked away in a vault in Vancouver somewhere - rotting away.
I'm lucky to have recovered a couple of CP Air 747 video clips, I have combed the internet extensively over this...and none of the airport shooters (film, 8mm, 16mm) never got these majestic colorful 747s, particularly the guys in Manchester, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Amsterdam and home base Vancouver - shooters in Honolulu and Sydney are forgiven because those were largely night ops and film then at night was virtually impossible.

The airlines are easy enough -

OS is Austrian Airlines
RJ is Royal Jordanian
ME is Middle East Airlines
MS is Egyptair
KU is Kuwait Airways
AI is Air India
IC is Indian Airlines
TG is Thai Airways
BG is Biman Bangladesh
SK is Scandinavian Airlines System aka SAS
VN is Vietnam Airlines
SQ is Singapore Airlines
PA is Pan American
TN is Trans-Australia Airlines aka TAA
QF is Qantas
TE is Air New Zealand
WA is Western
VA ... ?
SR is Swissair
AZ ... ?
LN is Libyan Airlines

The Qantas Boeing 707s mentioned by another poster - they would be Boeing 707-338C to give you the precise model in use at the time.

TAA never operated the Boeing 737-200.

At this time, they operated the Boeing 727-176, Boeing 727-276, Douglas DC-9-31, the Fokker F27-600 Friendship and the F-27-100 Friendship. It could have been any of these aircraft on that sector, so someone with a timetable will need to shake it out.

C'mon man AZ = Alitalia

VA, you are forgiven, that is long gone VIASA of Venezuela

You absolutely, correct on this. I do possess a copy of Bill Byrd's great Airliner Production List (from early internet days) that is the most accurate for all jet aircraft from A300-A340 -end, Boeing 707 to 747-400, McDonnell Douglas DC-9 to MD11 and Lockheed L-1011 .. but I was just too lazy to look up model type details.

Must have been a B707-321

I thought it was Alitalia then I second guessed myself and thought perhaps I was wrong. The airline that never dies :)

VIASA is a blast from the past, that's a name I haven't come across in a long, long time!

Understood, as I dig and dig trying to find the rare evidence of their 'moving image recordings'...I accidentally stumbled across a rare glimpse of their 747 Combi in Miami...never thought I'd see that again!

BN747. Couple wrong, SR241 and WA637. See my post above; both taken from period timetables. Some great info in your other inputs however.

PA217 in 1974 would not have been a DC-8 as they were retired by PA by 1969. As I noted the closest PA timetable to that time that I can find (mid- 73) actually gives different flight numbers for the Cacacas Rio leg (PA441 and PA515) although PA217 was the originating flight number from JFK. Indeed PA217 (New York to Caracas) crashed on 12th December 1968. Aircraft was N494PA, Clipper Malay, Boeing 707-321C.

Yup, the DC-8s were gone. Everything I wrote is from memory. But as many of us who have worked for a carrier or spent quite a bit of time around airport fences snapping off pics...we know ‘scheduled’ equipment had numerous changes. You’re waiting for a 707 to arrive and a it’s a 720 or a DC-9 shows up...still happening today, like my memory, the schedules had flaws vs what actually showed up on the ramp.

CVL is Caravelle.

ABC mean ABC Guide, the monthly book of airline schedules, on paper. I happen to have one for April 1974.
