Happy New Year to all. This year, 2019, will see the retirement of Air France's last A340s. This aircraft is becoming now an endangered species, it went out of production over ten years ago already. So here is an interesting question. Who will still be flying the A340 in 2020 and beyond? I'd say the airlines that currently fly the A346: Lufthansa, Iberia, South African Airways and Virgin Atlantic as far as I know. The A343 will be a rare species in 2020 and beyond. Who will still be flying it? South African Airways, Lufthansa, Air Belgium,....not sure Air Canada, Cathay Pacific, TAP, SAS and Finnair still fly the A340. Air Lanka maybe. I know Singapore doesn't fly the A340 anymore, and neither does Emirates. I know Iberia no longer flies the A343 but still flies the A346.
The A340 will be 27 years old in 2020.

SAS will be using their A340's for a while, until a decision on their replacement has been taken (which is rather a question "when" than "if")

SK this year will replace several A340 with a new A330 and 3 A350, the others will be replaced in 2020

SK only plans to withdraw 1 A340 this year, for the rest there are a chance that they can stay longer but it depends on fuel prices

Back in 1995 it promoted the DEL-CPH route in an Indian travel magazine, I think it was called Travel Trends, as the shortcut to northern Europe. All that is history now. In contrast, AY is heavy in Asia, especially Japan, with HEL-FUK, HEL-NGO and HEL-KIX being very popular. Why? (I am NOT talking about SK moving all its longhaul routes from OSL and ARN to CPH.)
