The problem with this industry

Mon Nov 05, 2018 11:49 pm

Here’s the problem with this industry. It lets one problem multiply into complete and utter chaos. Typical delays into EWR tonight. Low ceilings. So a one hour delay becomes two...maybe. They’re not sure. So after we boarded the first time, I.e after the first delay, they announced the second delay and said if you want to deplane you can. Whoops, then they said everyone must deplane for security reasons. Now we are delayed another hour and a half. Maybe. This is typical of this entire industry. Domino effect. They can’t manage the first problem so it snowballs into multiple. This is why people flip out at airports. And ATC. They can’t figure out exactly what the delay is? They don’t know how many flights are coming and going. A hundred people will jump down my throat and say it’s all about our safety. But there’s no excuse for this kind of chaos and disorganization. One problem shouldn’t allow the hole experience to morph into insanity. Oh. As I type this, the delay has changed again. So hang around the gate area. Or don’t.

It’s a very complex industry with very complicated regulations that exist for your safety.

If you want something simpler go hop on a greyhound.

Exactly, or go Amtrak.

If you don't like it then shut up and go elsewhere. It's not like this industry can be as easy as 1,2,3. Aviation is the safest transportation method for a reason.

What is the purpose of this thread besides a rant? What's the question or conclusion? Reported.

In the real world, shit happens. In the real world, shit happening has downstream effects. It's not because they can't "manage" their shit, it's because that's an unavoidable fact of how shit works in the real world.

What are you reporting exactly? That someone posted something that does not meet your posting criteria? Just so you know, the Mods already know that people very often will post their opinion on this forum.

It's kinda like a doctors appointment. If your appointment is late in the day, you may be a victim of an accumulation of problems that will make you have to wait to be seen. If you don't want delays caused by other people you could just walk I guess.

Every single flight is a logistical miracle, with a multi-hundred million dollar machine flying hundreds of people and the correct cargo between two pieces of billion dollar infrastructure, making journeys that could take days or weeks last just hours. The flight crew, cabin crew, and any number of air traffic controllers execute their job flawlessly. Gate agents receive dozens of complaints and requests each flight, many of which get honored.
This happens successfully over 100,000 times per day all over the globe. Very rarely do any significant delays or problems happen, and when they do, it's often for your safety. Even more rarely do major accidents happen, so much so that it's nearly statistically impossible to die in a plane crash. Problems only seem worse than they are because of the large scale on which they occur.
My point is, the current state of aviation is the product of over a century of innovation, and for the most part it's damn near perfect, all things considered. The biggest potential areas for improvement (capacity and efficiency) are being addressed as we speak.

I actually believe that the OP has a point. Yes, there are times when things will massively domino; but, too many times I see what are individually fairly minor issues domino.

I believe it is because we are pushing the airports to the limit. How much smoother would things go if the maxed out slot restricted airports were limited to 95% of existing slots during peak periods (perhaps it needs to be 90%). A lot. Minor delays would not have large cascades.

Such changes would require adjustments. It would not necessarily reduce total passenger counts through airports (this could be offset by larger aircraft). In some cases it would route some traffic to other airports. But, it would work.

Of course; a major weather event will always cause massive cascading delays - usually at multiple airports.

Have a great day,

The problem with the industry is two fold . Firstly in order for an airline to be profitable everything is cut back to cater for the best case scenario which 85% of the time can cope . When it encounters problems there aren’t the resources and back up available .

No 2 there is no control over expansion . For example as long as two airports say they have space you can run the flight . There is no liaison with atc (well certainly not in Europe ) so on the day in peak times results in massive delays as atc deal deal with flow on a day to day basis . Then the first problem happens . Add a bit of weather and This creates paralysis .

So the OP is talking about an ATC delay due to low ceilings Guess what, if ATC restricts arrivals the airlines are affected. IF ATC makes changes to the delays, the airlines are affected, The only other alternative is to cancel the flight but airlines generally want to get passengers to their destination.

ATC systems and infrastructure and airport infrastructure are public entities, not private.

Start there.
