Most peculiar or noteworthy multi-sector flights today?

Fri Nov 02, 2018 6:03 pm

(Can be ?-freedom flights or anything else)

In the early days of aviation, it was unimaginable to fly from London to Hong Kong without a dozen or more pit stops across many interesting (or not) cities.

As a person who hasn't frequently traveled outside Europe until very recently, I found it quite fascinating to find a heavy 777 traveling from Hong Kong to Taipei and then onward to Tokyo (with the same fight number, confirmed by Ministry). And an Emirates flight that does Dubai > Rangoon > Phnom Penh.

What are some of the most interesting, peculiar or noteworthy multi-sector flights around the world?

Two come to mind for me that a most famous with aviation enthusiasts in the US.

1. United Airlines Island hopper on the 737 between Honolulu and Guam, takes six stops along the way.

2. Alaska Airlines milk run, also on the 737 (used to be on the combi), between Seattle and Anchorage with multiple stops in Southeast Alaska.

I believe Air Tahiti Nui offers at least one flight that is same aircraft and flight number AKL-PPT-LAX-CDG - an interesting way to go to the other side of the world.

I also like South African's long-running IAD-DSS(DKR)-JNB routing.

There are plenty of small airlines that run these milk run trips.

LIAT in the Carribean does plenty, like LI 512 OGL-BGI-ANU-SKB, and Wideroe in Norway do some.

MH used to run a twice weekly 747 KUL-JNB-CPT-EZE

A lot of the current BA LGW 777 services to the Caribbean do little hops, like BA 2159 LGW-UVF-POS or BA 2157 LGW-ANU-PLS

Most of Southwest's flights are multi-sector flights. For example, flight #3137 on Saturdays flies BOS-ATL-SAN-SJC, and on Sundays MCO-ISP-BWI-PDX.

For hub airlines, that's a different game. I posted a thread about tag-on flights, such as the 1980's example of SBA-BFL-DFW and BFL-FAT-DEN, but the logistics of such operations don't work in the U.S. with today's business model, with the exception of the HNL-GUM island hopper and ANC-SEA milk run down the coast. Internationally, it's a different matter - some locations can't justify one plane, but there's enough demand to justify a pit-stop for more passengers and cargo (EK DXB-RGN-PNH).

Lovely flying Turku to Helsinki on the evening flight with Finnair for the view, first west to Mariehamn, but then after 20mins on the ground retracing your route back east flying over Turku, so you get to see the beautiful archipelago twice in the summer. Winters are darkness.Same price as the direct nonstop.

When I visited Jyväskylä in Finland in March this year, I opted to fly Helsinki - Kajaani - Jyväskylä - Kokkola - Helsinki and not the logical Helsinki - Jyväskylä return. Four flights instead of two with no price difference, an easy choice for someone who loves to be in the air.

QF 1 & 2 SYD-SIN-LHR [A380], and QF 9 & 10 MEL-PER-LHR[B789] and NZ 1 & 2 AKL-LAX-LHR[B77W] plus QF 11/12 SYD - LAX-JFK[A380/B789 - change of plane ONLY at LAX]
All are multi stop because no plane can economically fly the these routes, YET. All are likely to go non stop in the next decade.

Thanks all, pretty cool stuff!

I find Air Tahiti Nui's near-round-the-world flight particularly interesting (I saw they use 340 or 789). Is there some list of these really long ones?

Also found out Cathay Pacific has a scheduled flight Hong Kong - Bangkok - Singapore on a 351!

I know SQ flies SIN-FRA-JFK, SIN-MAN (formerly DME)-IAH, SIN-HKG-SFO, and SIN-NRT-LAX. Obviously range is a factor in all of these, but they’re some interesting routes none the less.
