Friendliest airports for spotting-2018

Tue Oct 30, 2018 2:19 pm

Hi all

Just browsing some recent pics and got some interesting ones on which I could consider are easier to get due the easiness for spotting.

A few:

AMS

LAX

SYD

IST

Please fell free to add others and spotters words on it are always welcome.

Easy by what definition. The AMS photo is taken from inside the terminal and cannot be reached by those who are not flying.

Still Amsterdam is a good place for spotting, however that picture is a bad example. However the spotters place next to the Polderbaan at the end of the IJweg is nice. It's the only spotters place without a fence between the spotters place and the runway. There is a canal of course so you can't walk to the runway. At least not without getting your clothes wet.

Besides that, there's also the panorama terrace on top of the terminal roof from where you got an overview of the airport.

Another airport which is great for spotting is Brussels. They have two spotters places, both overlooking a runway. It's very nicely done, some areas of the spotters places are slightly elevated.

This location perhaps?

Hobart airport (HBA/YMHB) (Tasmania, Australia) is a great location for spotting.
The control tower is situated on a hill, and has a public carpark at its base that looks over the fences.

LAS has the official viewing area and I've never been harassed on top of the garage.

While their fleets and airfields are smaller, BUR and MDW have some really decent spotting right at the end of the runways.

Zurich Airport!
Great spots and interesting variety of traffic.

Munich Airport has a decent observation deck (for sighting) but the glass makes it really difficult to get good shots without reflections.
The biggest mistake made by most human beings: Listening to only half, understanding just a quarter and telling double.

While COU is not considered a major airport (despite some scheduled commercial flights), it is plane-spotter friendly, as spotters not flying out can plane spot behind the fence near the airport terminal, or even inside the terminal building in either the arrivals concourse or in the additional waiting area (not past the TSA secure area) (shots taken from terminal is hit/miss, as they are taken through windows); during the Memorial Day weekend, there's a local air show taking place and tarmac access is open to the public during these few days; here are a dozen:

The only other plane-spotter friendly airport that I have photos from in the a.net database is BFI (some are taken inside the Museum of Flight); here are several:

Definitely LAX, by the In N Out is a great place to spot from the ground. I would call it the Mecca of plane spotting, but perhaps there are better places (on the ground and not sketchy like parking garages)?

AUS has a family viewing area. Not bad for spotting.

Quoting ojjunior (Reply #12): "Better now?"

yes, thank you for the ground photos taken at LAX. Would not be able to afford the helicopter for airplane spotting.

Other airports like STR or HAM also have (free) terraces. In STR there are even some small old planes, like an open-air museum.

I think the best experience is buying a ticket for the parking garage immediately East of KSAN, and watch planes fly over your head, staring straight down the runway with a view of the entire airport.

(They won't let you in if you're just planespotting, so gotta pay for parking). The aircraft pass even closer to you than Maho Beach.
"..your eyes will be forever turned skyward, for there.." yeah we know the DaVinci quote. But GA is so dang expensive these days! :(

HND has landside observation decks at every terminal.

FRA, TXL and many other German airports mentioned above are both spotter friendly and offer a variety of spots.

RKV has many spots you can spot from with nice views of the airport activity, but traffic is unfortunately very sparse. These are almost all taken from different spots:

Nothing compares to taking off in an empty 757 with full thrust!

EIN has an observation deck on top of the terminal. Nice view over the platform and the runway and easy access through the restaurant. Part of the observation deck is airside and can be accessed from the bar upstairs.

MSP has a spotters park located right by the runway. We also have a really nice airport police that are generally OK with people spotting in the parking garages at both T1 and T2.

With the spotters park you do need a small ladder to photograph over the fence, or be a rebel and stand on the picnic tables.
As of Sept 2018 I've flown 404,800 miles on 242 flights on 47 airplane types with 54 airlines traveling thru 96 airports in 42 countries. I've visited 58 countries with 1 more this year.
