I always thought the former Atlantic Southeast Airlines has a very clever callsign before they switched to “Acey”. Their call sign was “Candler”, which is an homage to Asa Griggs Candler, the founder of Coca Cola. The airline was headquartered in Atlanta, the home of Coca Cola and typically went by their initials of ASA. Pretty clever, in my opinion.

I honestly love all callsigns that are not the airline name.

Giant, Speedbird, Connie, Dynasty... all amazing!!!
Some European charter airlines also have nice ones... Beauty (TUI Belgium), Moonflower (Neos), etc...

Avianca’s callsing is Avianca, and to me it’s a beautiful name, so I’ll make it my no. 1.

I liked Air Florida: Palm and New York Air: Apple. Air South used Khaki Blue a reference to their colors. A blue blazer and khaki slacks is often referred to as the southern tuxedo.

I've always liked SAA callsign "Springbok", especially given the 1995 flyover of the Rugby World Cup final

This is the correct answer. Notable runners-up are "Redwood," "Speedbird" and "Critter."

This is at the top of my list too. However, your comment is unnecessary. While CI has had safety incidents in the past, their track record is very good of late. They have greatly improved. I flew them last year to RGN and was very impressed with them.

I didn't hear anyone say Springbok yet. That's another classic.

I was just stating what I heard. I too, like them. It is one of my favorite airlines, their service is much better than SQ, NH, or TG, in my opinion.

Must have been passed down

That was our call sign at Republic Express
in the 80’s

Always thought it was a good one

Prior to the merger with UA there was a
move at Continental to change our radio
call sign for brevity’s sake

My suggestion was ‘Cal’

It was not taken up

Cal probably couldn’t have happened when Air Cal was still flying. Has anyone used Cal before?

Really love critter and had forgotten about pan am clipper .
Interestingly beeline was first used by BEA before they merged with BOAC. Call signs can be re used . I know that Thomson now tui wanted to go back to Thomson from tui air but someone had got it so they are now tomjet.

Also like ascot which is raf transport flight and reach which is usaf .
Is there a website like domain names where you have to see what’s available when you start an airline ?

Is there any rules regarding what the callsign can be? I’d guess there’s a requirement for uniqueness although there might be leeway for someone in NZ to have the same as someone in Spain. What about the actual words, can I have “ Buttscratcher 69” and who is the arbiter if when it becomes silly?

I think only one carrier worldwide can use a callsign at one time . When a carrier stops using it . It goes back in the pool for others to use . For eg Thompson call sign was taken by a Australian billionaire that’s why they could re use it

Thundercat would be Catreus, a small private jet charter company based out of UK
http://avcodes.co.uk/details.asp?ID=28579

Jedi is Jet Story, a charter company based in Poland
https://aerosavvy.com/more-airline-call-signs/ (This list actually has quite a few of "interesting" callsigns that other in the thread already points out).

Getting somewhat off topic, but CI's old safety record was definitely awful, to the point that my family avoid them back in late 1990s even though their fare were dirt cheap (compare to CX or even NW back then) flying from HKG to mainland US via TPE. Their problems were not too different than KE's safety problem back around the same time period anyway, i.e. mostly ex-military pilots that formed the fairly toxic "hierarchial" culture with no regards to CRM.

Super is a required atc add on telling the controller an a/c is above a certain certified weight for spacing purposes.
Like heavy for 747,767,a340 etc. every aircraft has to use it.

So all this begs the question...how does an airline get its call sign and who or what assigns them?

An airline will submit an application to ICAO with their preferred callsign(s)

ICAO hold the register and allocate the callsigns to avoid duplication.
