Routes that exist to serve a specific industry

Mon Aug 06, 2018 9:48 pm

Any routes come to mind that exist to support a specific industry?

ATL-STR and CLT-MUC come to mind for the auto industry.

AA RDU-LHR. My understanding is that is driven by GSK / pharma companies.

SAS also flew Houston to Stavanger. Oil traffic.

BA JFK-LCY. Banker shuttle.

There are routes in the Oz Bush and the AK Bush that would definitely fit this bill (especially mining/petrology). Are you considering only manufacturing, or would you consider petroleum, etc, as well?

I assume you mean pax routes, since there are far more cargo-specific market pairs, e.g., GSP/MUC, than pax-specific.

DTW has a ton of routes that support the auto industry. DTW-NGO on DL and then 5D which has DTW-BJX, DTW-MTY(also served by DL) and soon DTW-QRO.

I think SEA-CHS is primarily linking Boeing business traffic.

Not long haul, there's JL's NGO-TSN, specifically targeting automotive industry (In this case, mainly Toyota, as they have a giant JV with First Automobile Work (a Chinese automobile manufacturer) based in Tianjin). For that matter, neither JL nor NH fly to TSN from either HND or NRT.

Of course, there's GVA-JFK/EWR and GVA-IAD, both targeting diplomatic (UN mainly) traffic mainly (Although GVA-JFK/EWR would probably have some banking traffic as well).

As for Oil Industry - IAH-YYC and IAH-YEG both probably quite a bit of oil & gas industry traffic. There was a few more industry-specific routes (SK's IAH-SVG, flights to Luanda and Lagos, also SQ's former IAH-DME), all of which since ended.

Already in the other thread, but AF's CDG-WUH is there mainly b/c of Groupe PSA (Peugeot/Renault), which has a large investment in Dongfeng Motors based in Wuhan. There are other French companies in WUH also, though, so it's not just a single industry (Wuhan itself has the largest amount of French investment in mainland China).

Toronto-Pearson to Fort McMurray, Alberta. Shuttling workers into and out of the oil patch.

Calgary-Houston for petroleum workers. One of AC's longest 4-abreast (CRJ705/E175/E190) routes if I recall.

I'd expect ICT-SEA on AS is likely also heavily aviation-related.

Were it only so, getting into or out of ICT is mostly to DFW or ORD.

How about LAS-Tonopah. I'd say that route serves a specific industry.

SonAir's service (recently discontinued) between Luanda and IAH was a significant example of serving one industry.

Since the OP didn't exclude cargo flights, I'll offer up ZAZ-JFK, flown by Qatar Airways almost exclusively to serve Inditex (parent of Zara) to get its products across the Atlantic. At one time, Turkish Airlines also flew this sector.

Air Canada's YYZ-YUL-GVA route might also exist largely to serve specific traffic, especially the YUL-GVA sector (which serves both the IATA, which has its headquarters in Montreal and executive offices in Geneva, and the ICAO, a UN agency also with its headquarters in Montreal, linking to a UN office in Switzerland).

For Airbus you have XFW-TLS, TLS-NTE-SNR, TLS-BRS-CEG and AGB-MRS. Some of them are exclusive for Airbus, others are open to book for everybody.

I have heard, but I can't find anything on my Google machine to back it up, that Walmart provides subsidies to airlines for some air service to Northwest Arkansas (XNA) airport. Particularly flights to/from the NYC area.

IAH-LOS has been run by a few carriers I believe. Purely oil traffic.
Also Intel has their shuttles between HIO-SJC-PHX

How about the helicopter services from Aberdeen to the North sea oil rigs - do they count in the context of this thread?

RTM-LCY (and earlier) AMS-LCY was boosted hugely by Shell International. I believe BA holds that contract now in RTM.

Specifically which industry? Plus pretty sure routes like HGH-BKK is 99% leisure. Route(s) like NH's HGH-NRT (and to lesser extent, HGH-KIX, since Osaka overall is more of a leisure destination) maybe business-oriented (i.e. Japanese businesses having investments in Hangzhou area), but it's not limited to one single industry. Yes, Hangzhou is a tech hub, but its economy is more than high tech industry (And quite frankly, "High Tech" industry is a very board term. It can range from everything from machinary/instruments to microelectronics fab to IT/"Fintech" or even Biotechnology/Pharma, all of which are different sectors that required totally different expertise).

SFO-DUB is a route that serves the tech industry. There are a lot of big US multinationals in Dublin, mainly tech giants from Silicon Valley. Aer Lingus has arrangements with tech companies to buy certain amounts of seats on each flight.
