On 24th of August I've planned a west cost trip from New York to SFO.
What Airline/Aircraft do you prefer?
By now my favorite is a DL flight from Jfk on a 330-200.
It's late but it's not so bad with my connection from MXP.

I really like AS, plus you'll likely get a chance to fly on an A321neo. If you want a bigger plane, as you mentioned DL is the way to go with their 767s on JFK-SFO.

You could fly EWR-SFO on a UA transcon configured 757-200. I priced economy seats for potential trips when my in laws make a trip to the US. They have lots of flights throughout the day.

Do you already have a MXP to JFK flight? If so your connection won’t be a connection as we typically think of one, it will be two individual flights back to back.

If you're from Milan Malpensa on your way to San Francisco, must you really stop in New York? Or can you make your transfer somewhere else? If not, you could for example fly EasyJet from Malpensa to Barcelona and then Norwegian from Barcelona to Oakland. Oakland is as good as San Francisco, doesn't matter much which airport you take. Then you can skip New York.

It really depends on the class of service you are flying.

Who are you flying on the MXP-JFK leg? If you are taking DL, then I'd go with DL again on JFK-SFO. You won't have to change terminals and would have the easiest connection. Plus DL is the only airline that flies a wide body on the route, so there's a chance you could get a 763/764. If not, even the 75S they fly on the route are nice.

Yes you are true. But I have had many miles to spend with AZ and with Alitalia financial trouble I preferred to book in advance a flight for me and my family, and one of the few possible destinations was NYC.

So I guess you will be changing terminals, going from T1 to T4. If you still want a widebody, I'd stick with DL. I don't know what the experience of changing terminals at JFK is like though.

Avoid Alaska as not a good transcontinental product. DL is probably best on transcontinental. Going to start problems here, but I think B6 Mint is overrated.

Finally booked DL 435 departing at 21.00, operated on a 330-200.

The AirTrain between terminals is not too complicated to use, he will have to go landside anyway as he's arriving on an international flight.

AZ to DL is still SkyTeam to SkyTeam which will probably make your life easier. You can probably book that all on one ticket, and domestic widebody flights in the US are less and less common nowadays, so I'd say stick with DL.

I would pick Air China via PEK.
