Airports with funny names

Thu Aug 02, 2018 11:55 pm

Albuquerque international "Sunport"
Portland "Jetport"
Eugene "Sweet Field"

Couldnt find much on why these places chose to go with a distinct name. Best I could find was that Albuquerque thought it would increase tourism(?). Also, if anyone has any other examples of non-traditional airport names and a story to go along with it id like to hear about it.

Eugene's airport is named after a man named Mahlon Sweet.

Love -Named after a military test pilot who died in a crash.

Eppley - Named after a wealthy Omaha resident whose estate donated $1,000,000 (decades ago, when that was a lot of money) for the Omaha airport.

Honestly, a lot of the "funny" names are named after people who are philanthropists in their respective cities, war heroes from their respective cities, or local politicians who appropriated a lot of taxes for their city.

Seeing as how he was a comedian, would Burbank Bob Hope Airport fit the bill?

I always liked this one

"Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (IATA: CCU, ICAO: VECC) is an international airport located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, serving the Kolkata metropolitan area. It is located approximately 17 km (11 mi) from the city center. The airport was earlier known as Dum Dum Airport"

Yonago Kitaro Airport (YGJ), a small city's airport in Japan.

The city Sakaiminato near Yonago is the birthplace of Mr. Shigeru Mizuki, the creater of Japan's monster manga " Gegege no Kitaro ".
Yonago Kitaro Airport is the gateway for travel destinations in the Sanin district.

Ironically funny - Montreal-Trudeau airport.

It was Pierre Trudeau's government that developed Montreal-Mirabel airport to replace Montreal-Dorval (now Trudeau) airport. The plan was eventually to shut it down. Obviously, this never happened and Mirabel airport was the one shut down. Then, they named Dorval airport after Pierre Trudeau in the 2000s.

A favourite of mine. Quite ironic that it's a dirt strip in an isolated part of Wyoming. Apparently the story behind it is in the mid 90s there was asteroid discovered that was thought to be in a collision course to Jupiter. The residents decided to rename their airstrip to welcome any Jovian extra terrestrial refugees that arrive.

Otherwise from those mentioned I do like PWM's "Portland International Jetport" has a very late 50s/early 60s retro-futuristic dawn of the jetage vibe about it.

While not a funny name by any means one that has a less obvious meaning is MDW "Chicago Midway Airport" named after the Battle of Midway in the Pacific theatre of WWII.

Jupiter to Earth isn't an intergalactic journey.

Not quite along those lines, but I will forever love the name of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport

They thought wrong, clearly it was on a collision course with the Earth.

Your story is however incorrect. It was named as such (by the Green River city council) and designated an official landing site so 'the inhabitants of Jupiter, who may wish to take sanctuary in Green River, in the event their planet is threatened by collisions of comets or meteors'. This shortly after Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9 impacted Jupiter.
aka cheap publicity stunt.

Only funny if you understand Dutch but ZRH is called Kloten, which is Dutch for the stuff men have in between their legs.

Any small community airport that uses the name of a major city that's more than 50 miles away.

OKC: Will Rogers World Airport is a bit ironic, since it's longest scheduled flight is to SEA...

Rotterdam Zestienhoven. In Dutch Zestienhoven means sixteen courtyards.

As a child I always called this airport Zestienhoog instead of Zestienhoven. That's because my grandfather was living in an apartment overlooking the airport and he lived on the sixteenth floor. The Dutch word hoog means high, so he was sixteen high, after the airport. At least, that was my logic as a child. Unfortunately he isn't anymore, but I still got good memories to the view from where he lived. The airplanes were passing very close on their approach to the airport, it was a beautiful sight.

Not official of course, but I always enjoyed that there's a listing for "Hartsfield Latoya Jackson Intergalactic Spaceport & Nail Emporium".
