Is there different implementation among different airlines about what vegetables should be excluded from oriental vegetarian meals?
I found a report from some years ago which stated that IATA told airlines to exclude root vegetables from oriental vegetarian diet, however that would also exclude plants like ginger, potato, carrot and such from the meal, which are not necessary to many people who follow oriental vegetarianism and that they are also used in many vegetarian meals there, which as a result some airlines from Taiwan have limited the excluded vegetables to what is traditionally known as the five spices (usually allium vegetables and other similar plants but with some specific additions for Taoist)
And then there are other airlines that follow the recommendation to exclude all root vegetables, and there are also airlines that doesn't seems to list any vegetables from being excluded on their introduction page for special meals they offer, instead simply saying they are Chinese styled vegetarian meals.
Where can I find out exactly how IATA recommend airlines to handle these meals and how each airlines treat them?
And why did IATA choose to apply the wider than necessary scope of no root plants when they make recommendation to airlines?

My guess is that elimination of root vegetables makes the diet suitable for the followers of Jainism (?)

It starts to get ridiculous when passengers want gluten free non root vegetable vegetarian meals. And that is just one example.

Jainists indeed seem to be under self-imposed prohibition of consuming root vegetables, among other things.

South-East Asian vegetarians tend to be so for religious reasons, and I know for a fact that onions, garlic etc. are considered "non-vegetarian" in Bhuddism (although I still don't really know why). Believe me - vegetarian there really means no meat, onions or garlic!
I would expect these bulb-root vegetables to be the topic of the additional restrictions, not root vegetables in general.

The word "Oriental" is being wrongly used here.....that word generally refers to countries like China, etc. This avoidance of certain vegetables is common among the Jain (not "Jainist") community in India....some airlines offer special meals that avoid these vegetables....

One hopes that these more 'regional' variations of vegetarianism (be it for religious, or non religious purposes) remain limited to the geographical area of the communities following them, and does not become the next fashionable diet for upmarket hipsters in the western world.... life - food/diet-wise too- is already complicated enough...

Indeed but I think there are specific meal code for Jainism traveller and I don't think there are many if any at all Jainism followers in East Asia
