Should MH/JL have joined Skyteam instead of One World?

Tue Jul 17, 2018 4:50 am

I think they suite Skyteam more but at the end they joined One World. Why is that?

I think JL is perfectly suited in oneworld. Ot suits their portfolio of having hubs in the world's largest financial centres (LHR-BA, SYD-QF, GRU-JJ/LAN, JFK-AA, HKG, CX and of course JL-NRT/NRT). JL's JV with BA-AY-IB seems to work very well for them as well as the TPAC between JL-AA. I'm sure CX and JL have a good relationship considering their extensive codesharing within HKG and JPN as well as QF and JL for JPN-AUS flights.

oneworld is relatively weak in SE Asia so I guess having MH suits their needs considering MH's fairly considerable operations in SE Asia despite having a huge downgrade in capacity and routes. One thing that really puzzles me is that MH isn't exactly an active player within oneworld when it comes to FF benefits. I hold BAEC Silver (oneworld Sapphire) and QF FF Silver (oneworld Ruby- upgrading to QF Gold after my flights next month). Having oneworld elite status means you can book seats in advance and access to preferred seating but MH does not offer any of these unless you wait 48 hours before your flight. There's also no point flying with MH if you are a member of another oneworld FFP other than their own due to their dire earn and burn rate! Asia Zone 2 (601-1200 miles- correct me if I am wrong) redemption will require >20k miles!
