New/Reinforced Curfew at LGA?

Mon Jun 25, 2018 1:40 pm

I was flying home into LGA last night and there was a ground stop that was delaying flights up and down the east coast. For the first time ever, our flight crew on board DL2590 was informing us of a curfew at LGA that went into effect at midnight and stated it was new. The captain even warned us of a possible diversion to JFK as a result if they didn't make an exception for the weather/ATC delays that were ongoing last night. Does anyone know about this? I think I knew of a voluntary curfew, but never one that was that much enforced there.

It isn't new, but it also doesn't run all year. The closure is hard (the NOTAM does mention 4 hours ppr, so I guess it can be busted with enough lead time) from 04z until 10z and runs until Nov. Generally, ATC will give us a heads up in the evening if they plan on keeping the airport open longer due to en route issues and we plan accordingly.

Why would it be not year round?

I don't know. There is a higher chance for irregular ops during the winter months, so maybe that plays into it.

I wonder how often they have to relax it then? They seemed to have no issue doing it when I flew home. I was one of quite a few planes that landed at LGA after midnight. There were also quite a few taking off.

On 'bad' days, the airport authority will extend the curfew to accommodate late arrivals. I can't comment on how often that is.
