I'm surprised I never landed at...

Fri Jun 22, 2018 12:49 am

SLC.

When I got my first "real" job in the early 2000's, I took my paychecks which I incorrectly thought were impressive and frequently bought plane tickets. I can comfortably say I've added most of the lower 48's "major" airports (without accepting any formal definition of "major"), and nearly all of the hub airports, with the bizarre and glaring exception of SLC. Hub for a srsly major airline, that is, and I've never connected there. :boggled:

Also I've not landed at BWI. Not a hub, I know, but obviously Balto. is a major city and I love cities. I'm given to believe that it has a B&O Railroad Museum, a Baltimore Streetcar Museum, a National Marimatime Museum, a Shot Tower, an original Washington Monument, an H. L. Mencken house, and a Museum of Public Works; so it sounds like a city I could really enjoy spending three or four days in. Instead, I've never even landed at their airport.

Nor at SLC.

And I'm surprised by that.

When you look at your I-Landed-There List, do you see any surprising lacunae yes LACUNAE???

I've never landed or taken off from JFK (having grown up in northern NJ). EWR was my home airport until moving to the DFW metroplex. I have flown into and out of LGA twice but only because I got a helluva price on airline tickets from there for where I was going to that it made the trip out to Queens worth it (JFK was just too far to get to, you'd often spend more time in traffic getting to and from there than the actual trip itself). Never went anywhere international as a kid that would warrant flying out if JFK. First international trip was to Europe on British Airways out of EWR in 1993 (high school field trip).

Quoting Airstud (thread starter), "do you see any surprising lacunae yes LACUNAE???"

not a clue what you're talking about. My guess is you are taking some powerful medications.

I had to look it up, but lacunae is an appropriate (if obscure) word here.

DFW, MIA and CLT were all conspicuously absent from my log until recently, when I added them all on a single trip. MIA was a bonus -- my DFW-TPA flight was cancelled and I got re-routed via MIA. With those out of the way, I believe that EWR is now the most glaring omission on my domestic airport list. FWIW, my flight log is currently at about 350 total segments, mostly USA domestic, and mostly on DL (NW is still barely hanging on at #2).

In terms of the busiest airports in the US (according to Wikipedia) I've not been to:
#8 LAS, #15 IAH, #21 FLL, #24 SLC, #25 MDW, #31 DAL, #33 BNA, #34 HOU, #37 MSY, #39 MCI #40 SJC....outside the top 40 the list becomes more extensive. When you consider that I'm not a big DL flyer and have never flown WN it starts to make sense. I never really flew CO either and haven't flown UA much since the CO merger...

Lots more gaps in the international list:
#2 PEK, #4 HND, #9 PVG, #13 CAN, #15 IST, #16 DEL, #17 CGK, #19 ICN out of the top 20. Have only been to 26 out of the top 50!

How have you managed that? More take offs than landings. How do you take off and not land? Unless you are posting this from inflight WiFi???

Still have a bunch of "top" hubs/focus cities to land at, EWR, IAD, MDW, BOS, MIA, DEN, SFO, BNA, MEM, PIT, RDU, HOU, SJC, SAN, OAK, and PDX. Got my work cut out for me.

Never landed at Rotterdam. Being Dutch it could just easily have happened, but so far it hasn't been the case. Never took off from there either.

Also I've never landed at Groningen, but I did take off from there once.

Living in India, I'm surprised I've never once had to use DXB / DOH / AUH (though I did once use BAH on GF thanks to the cheap ticket) on any of my westbound trips.

In the other direction, I've managed plenty of south east Asian airport, except for BKK / DMK. Never found a flight deal worth considering through either.

Until this month, it was HKG, which I completed just this month on DL39, which will be discontinued this year. Previously I flew to SZX last year and CAN twice.

For me it's SFO. I went to the city when I was 3, which I have no memory of except for a ferry ride. I have done the major SEA, PDX, LAX on the West Coast.

Potentially based on one of my flights in my itinerary next Wednesday makes us misconnect, then I may have a chance of connecting through SFO and maybe even fly a B748i!

I FINALLY Crossed MIA off my list back in October of last year. Cannot believe all the times I've been to Florida that I've never flown in or out of MIA. I've been back once since then as well.

But the airport that has continued to elude me is ORD.

RDU busiest for me (38th busiest US airport). Next one is OGG (50). Then ANC (56). Then RIC (66).

Internationally PEK (2nd busiest airport in world), DXB (3rd), CAN (13th), CGK (17th).

At this point the busiest US airport that I've haven't visited is HNL. I go to Europe several times per year but still have yet to connect in FRA.

Based in Australia. Have landed at most airports in the country thanks to moving around alot regionally as a kid.

I had flown internationally from every airport in the country (except one) that has (or had) international service - DRW, PHE, MEL, TSV, BNE, ADL, PER, MCY, OOL etc. I had even flown internationally (private) from ROK. However, I had never flown internationally from SYD until last year.

Never landed in LHR to my recollection, but it is possible I've done so as a kid.

There are a lot of airports that I've never been to, but I can't say that many of them are "surprising" that I haven't been to them. I haven't been to most of Southwest's "hubs" or whatever they like to call them, but that's not surprising because I rarely fly on Southwest.

Actually, what's surprising is that I've never set foot inside the passenger terminal at PDX, since I used to work on a team that was split between Sacramento and Portland. Yeah, I've technically landed there, but only when the corporate shuttle to HIO had to divert there, and when that happened we'd taxi to the GA side of the airport and get bused to Hillsboro. I've never actually landed there on a flight that was actually scheduled to land there, only diversions.

Been to Chicago several times and flown into MDW every time.

Also I'll happily expand that list of Baltimore attractions for you. Fort McHenry, Oriole Park, National Aquarium to name a few.

I guess I would define a "major airport" as having 150 or more daily flights, so with that said, as far as US travel is concerned, I've not ever made it to JFK, PHL, SAN, MDW, PDX, and perhaps ANC would fall onto this list as well.

I've only gone overseas every 5 or so years (would love to change that) but within the states the only major hub I can think of that I haven't landed at is IAD. When flying to D.C. I just go to DCA and when you live in Boston IAD isn't a significant connecting point. I did go to their awesome museum though.I
haven't been to SLC or
PDX either. I try to catch domestic widebodies as much as I can and SLC I've always avoided because usually on DL if I'm going that far west it's to SAN or LAX or SEA where I can easily connect at another hub for a widebody.

Update: Due to a mishap in connecting I cross SFO off the list and the 747-8i as well too. All is left is going east of Wyoming, which I haven't done.

There's a lot of airports I've never landed in. But I've never landed on any airport on the west coast of the Lower 48. Never really had a desire to go, except maybe for SEA which may happen at some point.

Of the top 30 US airports, I have only missed MDW. I have missed many, many international airports. I have a list somewhere. I think I have landed at 70 or 80 airports one time or another.

For me I'd say SOU, where I've had multiple clients but always driven to / from and NWI, where I was born but never been back to.

Will need to rectify both of these soon.

I've done most of my flying in the U.S, so I'd say the biggest gaps for me are JFK, EWR and DCA.

Having been to Canada many times, up until this year I had never flown into or out of a single Canadian airport, I always drove across the border from the US. This year finally YVR made the list but YYZ is still one of the more obvious places that I have been to but surprisingly have never flown into or out of.

SXF, our nation's capital's second airport especially with me having done TXL for the first time after I had flown some other German domestic segments fifteen times or more in each direction.

DFW and CLT are the only major U.S. airports that I’ve not used.

In the UK, I guess I’m surprised I never used EMA as a kid (given its proximity to Sheffield). We always used MAN or LHR.

SLC is probably my most surprising omission as well, considering I used to regularly fly between MSP and PHX and sometimes connections were cheaper. I got DEN connections a lot, and even had out-of-the-way layovers at places like CLE, CVG, ATL, and IAH.

HNL for me! All my Australia - US flying before the the non stops were via PPT [long story, basically for contract reasons & I did like UTA] then the non - stops came along and HNL just disappeared as far as I'm concerned. I must go there one day.
