I just saw this article on DesignAir, and a couple of the entries surprised me. I had no idea that Virgin Atlantic had under 10million passengers and with all the news on Brussels Airlines and Hong Kong Airlines recently, I thought they were much bigger too. It raises the question, which airlines under 10million do you know of that give the impression of being much larger?

I would say Lot and Icelandair. I always imagined both being much larger than they actually are.

For airlines like El Al and VS, this measure counts against them due to longer average sector lengths. That is why RPKs is a more meaningful measure when it comes to airline size.

Though Etihad has now more than 10mil I always expected them to be much larger.

It's a hard measure.
QF international has less than 10m passengers per annum, whereas QF domestic has 20m plus. On the revenue side they are about even.
AirAsia and it's franchises have 30-40% more aircraft than Jetstar and it's franchises. On the revenue side, again they are about even!

Defo FlyDubai, SN and VS. All of them operate so many aircraft it seems really hard to have under 10 million pax

I don’t know about the others but Flydubai carried 10.9 million passengers in 2017 at least according to their own full-year report. Growth was 5.5% so it must have been over ten already the year before. Not the most recent info on that list...

Condor has less then 10 min. I thought they would ferry a lot of people to the canaries and palma majorca
