Could WOW launch service to MEX or SAO?

Sun Jun 17, 2018 2:02 pm

With WOW launching service to markets like India and Israel, and expansion plans to Asia, LATAM seems like an untapped market from Iceland.

Iceland is getting a lot of attention globally b/c of the World Cup and the country wants to take advantage of it:

Iceland Bets on Viking Thunder-Clap to Reignite Tourism Boom

At at the same time to tourist boom is slowing down, which worries the Icelandic government:

There are signs that the frequency of direct flights from Europe is on the wane. In recent months, Icelandic airlines have discontinued direct flights to five destinations in the UK and Ireland and two in Norway. Icelandair will not offer night flights to Europe this sum- mer, AirBerlin ceased operations last autumn, Eurowings is reducing the number of flights from Germany to Keflavík this summer, and direct flights from Prague will be discontinued, at least temporarily. On the other hand, Lufthansa is adding additional flights to Iceland, and domestic airlines have begun to offer more frequent flights to Berlin since AirBerlin went out of business. Furthermore, Icelandair and WOW Air have begun flying to six new destinations in the US this year. Russian airline S7 will also fly direct between Keflavík and Moscow this summer. Moreover, Icelandic airlines have expressed an interest in offering direct flights to Asia from Keflavík.

So could WOW launch MEX and SAO (whether it is GRU or VCP)?

- Mexico City and Sao Paulo are by far the largest local markets and concentration of wealth in the Latin-speaking Americas. A lot of people in both CDMX and Sao Paulo to indulge on an "exotic" holiday in Iceland.

- Both cities lack low-cost long-haul services to Europe (if we discount Azul on VCP) in the likes of Norwegian, LEVEL or Eurowings. WOW could take advantage of this.

Thoughts?

I could see Mexico City and perhaps Cancun happening, but Sao Paulo not. It's too far away and the route would be too thin. Besides, the Brazilian laws are very LCC-unfriendly, demanding that on all international flights luggage must be included for free. Those luggage fees are just the way WOW Air makes money.

Mexico is hardly any further than the USA and besides the economics it's also a nice destination for a holiday in the sun, as is the rest of central America and the Caribbean. Only a matter of time before they start flying there. Brazil on the other hand is a whole lot further, certainly if you take into consideration that Sao Paulo is all the way in the south of Brazil about as far away as you can get.
