AKL on a Sunday Morning : Airport or City?

Mon Jun 11, 2018 2:38 am

Hello All! I'm travelling with my wife from SCL to PPT, via AKL. We should land at AKL on a Sunday Morning ( SCL-AKL LA801 ), if we are on time, should be landing around 5:00 AM, and have to wait until 15:00 before boarding our flight AKL-PPT ( TN102 ).
My question is : Should we stay at the transit área of the airport all the time, or should we take a taxi to see the city as soon the sun rises ? Is there anything to see, or even an open place at AKL on a Sunday at 8:00 AM ? What do you think? I'm sure AKL is a very nice place to visit and I really want to see the city, but I'm sure that experience deserves more than a few couple of hours.
10 hours in an airport is not a problem for me ( you know that since I´m writing HERE ), but my wife just hates the idea of 10 hours with nothing to do between flights.

By the way, we are travelling with Uruguayan/Chilean passaports, so AFAIK we shouldn't have any problem ( like a VISA requirement ) to leave the transit área of the airport if we decide to take a trip to the city.

Any info, advice, opinion or comment will be appreciated.

Best Rgds.!!

OK, I think I will follow your suggestion. Do you know if the taxi drivers in the city accept american dollars or Euros?

I highly doubt it. I'd either use a credit card or get some NZD.

I just read on the web about Skybus service, I think could be a smart choice, and apparently I can buy tickets online before the flight.

I took the Skybus into central Auckland when I went to New Zealand in 2010. One of their stops is right near the ferry terminal (my hotel was in Devonport). It worked well for me.

I agree Skybus is definitely the best option.

Last time I flew into AKL I took the local bus (380 i think?) to Onehunga then train to Auckland City. It worked out half the price of Skybus but twice as long. If you're not familiar with Auckland, or short on time I wouldn't recommend it. Not sure if it is an option that early on a Sunday anyway.

I concur on Skybus. I booked online and used them last time I visited. Definitely the best balance of value and convenience. Online still gives a 10% discount, I believe.
