First Flight and Airline?

Sat Jun 09, 2018 2:54 am

What was the first flight you ever took, and what airline? My first flight was at 14 on Braniff Airlines, MDT-ORD-OKC and return. At 21, I upgraded to TWA, PHL-JFK-FRA and returning stateside 3 years later on TWA, FRA-JFK. I remember writing home from Germany telling Mom and Dad about how HUGE my plane was, and how it was like the inside of a movie theater :D

I've travelled extensively since then, but I still have fond memories of my first flights!

My first flight was a TWA 707 EWR-LAX back in summer of '82. Return flight was a United 747 (at least according to my folks - I was 5 years old).

First trip were MEL-HKG-PEK and back when I was on CX. Don’t know what aircraft it was.

First trip from my current airport were BNE-SIN-PEK and back on SQ.

First trip I recorded details (like aircraft type) was BNE-SIN-FRA, AMS-SIN-BNE on SQ.

My first flight was on Air Holland (now defunct), Amsterdam - Faro on a 757-200. Two weeks later Faro - Amsterdam also on an Air Holland 757-200. I guess I was about 10 years old at the time, so it must have been somewhere around 1990.

By the way, Air Holland may long be defunct but after it's bankrupcy and with a lot of steps inbetween it eventually evolved into TUIfly Netherlands. Funny thing is that the callsign of Air Holland "Orange" is now in use by TUIfly Netherlands.

My first flight was way back in late May 1987. Going from LGW-MCO with BA on a 747 classic, returning 2 weeks later on another 747.

quoting eieiowe61 (thread starter), " My first flight was at 14 on Braniff Airlines, MDT-ORD-OKC . . ."

First of all, good grief, haven't we had this topic over and over and over again in the past?

But while I'm here, . . ., eieiowe61, what year and what type of equipment are you referring to with regard to your flights on Braniff Airlines?

Although I'm not an expert on Braniff, I am aware that the company was known as Braniff AIRWAYS (not Airlines) from its incorporation in 1931 until 1946; then as Braniff International AIRWAYS (not Airlines) from 1946 until it ceased operations in 1982.

The only time I am aware of the use of the word Airlines in its title was the short-lived "third" iteration of this company from 1991 unti 1992, when it was known as Braniff International Airlines and it essentially was not the same airline as the original. Even the IATA code was changed from BN to BE.

Also, the reason I asked about the year is that I was not aware that any iteration of the Braniff name served Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (MDT) at any time in its history. Perhaps you could provide more details.

First ever flight: SJO-PTY, September 1987, presumably on LR (I was 4 years old, so obviously nobody remembers back then if it was on CM or LR, much less me)
First transatlantic flight: MIA-HAM, February 1989, on LT
First domestic flight: FRA-HAM, February 2010, on LH

First flight ever: DL SEA-CVG in 2008. I don't remember much about the flight, but I think it was probably on a 738. My dad and I connected and changed terminals, most likely to the former Concourse C since I remember taking a bus, and took a RJ to BWI.

My first flight was I think GLT-BNE in 1993. It was on an Australian Airline that wasn't Qantas or Ansett . I think it was "SkyWest" but the aircraft didn't resemble anything like SkyWest in recent years so it might have been a different airline. I remember the plane having a green/turquoise tailfin with an orange circle in the center - almost like the Bangladeshi flag.

My first flight ever was on a private/company plane (some kind of Learjet) for the company my dad worked for at the time. I was 4 years old and it had to be 1976. I don't remember where we were going or anything else about the flight but I have a specific memory of looking out the window at the runway edge line as we accelerated, then watching it fall away as we took off.

My first airline flight... I'm gonna say was probably something like EWR-PDX or JFK-PDX (not sure which route they actually flew) on a Northwest Orient 747. That would have been in something like 1978, when I was 6 years old.

Must have been Soviet Aeroflot in 1991. I was too young to remember anything. First flight that I am aware of was HAJ-DME on Siberia Airlines (S7) on board of a Tu154M. Actually it was planned to fly HAJ-OMS, but that flight got cancelled and we have been rescheduled on HAJ-DME-OMS

In fall 2008: FRA-ACE, your typical holiday flight on a Tuifly B737-800.

I was 11 at the time of that flight.

First intercontinental was FRA-PHL in 2013 on a US Airways A330-200.

PI4EVER (Reply # 19), would that actually have been on Capital Airlines (not Capitol) and the enroute stop was at Rocky Mount, NC (RWI)? It is possible Rocky Mount's identifier was RMT in 1951; I think RWI today.

Dating myself here. Northeast Airlines of the UK (now British Airways) in a Vickers Viscount from Belfast to Leeds. I was with my twin sister and we were unaccompanied minors. We sat at a fixed dining table at the front with two seats facing us. We also did an overshoot at Leeds for some reason. Northeast had such a vibrant yellow and black colour scheme. I'm unsure if the flight was from the "old" Belfast airport of Nutts Corner or the new one at Aldergrove. I think the latter.

My first flight: SJO-PTY, September 1987. What I'm not sure is if the flight was with LR or with CM and if it was on a 727 or 737. Whatever the airline and equipment, my first flight was definitely on a Boeing.

First flight around 1980-81 (9 years old) was a charter flight (not sure which airline - probably Thomas Cook) from MAN to MIR (Tunisia) on a 737-100 or 200.

Believe it or not, my first flight ever was at 3 years old and I also have some memories tatooed in my brain : the square window, the noise, and the fuel truck, I'm talking about a C-47 or DC3 of the old ( and now defunct ) PLUNA. My family was travelling from Montevideo to Salto, a small town in Uruguay.
My first flight on a jet aircraft was at 9 y.o. , December 30, 1982, Lan Chile, Boeing 737 ( I assume a 732 ), from Montevideo to Santiago.

December 1984 DL DTW-FLL. I don't remember the aircraft type as I was less than 1 year old. According to departedflights in December 1983 it was a DC-8-70 but it may have been replaced by 1984. The 757 was introduced on Dec 1, 1984 so I think it's unlikely they would've put it on an oddball Point-to-point route like DTW-FLL. The evening flight in 1983 was a 727-200 but I'm fairly sure we would've been on the morning flight.

Give him a break. Plenty of new people have joined since the last time this topic was discussed, including the thread starter. Since we're not supposed to bump old threads, how are new members supposed to share their first flights without starting a new thread?

To answer the OP's question, I didn't take my first flight until October 2003, when I was 23 years old, so I remember it well. My parents considered flying to be too expensive, so we always took road trips for vacations when I was a kid. My first flight was RDU-ORD-SEA, the first leg was on a BAe-146 operated by Air Wisconsin dba United Express, the second was a United 757-200. Return was also via ORD on United and UAx/Air Wisconsin, on an A320 and another BAe-146.

I'm impressed with how many answers there are! To recall your first flight you'd either have to be old enough to remember or have parents who are also aviation nerds.

I really couldn't say mine since my parents don't have any particular interest in aviation and I've been flying since an infant but I can share the earliest flights I do remember.

I few A LOT of UA 757s from BOS-ORD and BOS-DEN to visit family as a child. Often still in the white and orange livery! As I child I used to calculate the size of the plane by how many wheels the landing gear had, the 757 seemed like a very large plane to me with it's tall stance at the gate and I know they were 757s in hindsight because of the double boogies with single isle. I also vividly remember an NW DC10 in the bowling shoe livery from BOS-MSP. First widebody flight I can recall. These would have been mid-late 90s.

November 1991 I think the week before or even of Thanksgiving, PHX-ORD on a United 727-200. Our family had to go back to Chicago for my grandfather's funeral. Despite the sadness of the trip I was still super excited for my first plane trip as I had already gotten bitten by the aviation bug at that point at age 11. It was the first flight out that morning and there was a hot breakfast meal, but I don't really remember what it was. But being a growing 11 year old I probably ate every bite of it. The return was on another 727, I really don't remember any of the other details on that trip. Even as an aviation excited 11 year old a week plus sleeping on couches, post funeral and dealing with that stuff had me worn out too.

I stand corrected due to a typo. It was Capital Airlines, not Capitol International which I flew on as well.
RMT was the original Rocky Mount Eagle airport and remained in use until 1980 after the new Rocky Mount-Wilson Airport had opened.
Capital served RMT but service was discontinued and given to or taken over by Piedmont, which also served RWI until they retired their prop fleet.

I was 3 months old in December 1992 on (most likely) a Northwest A320 from Memphis to Los Angeles.

It could possibly have been a 727 or even a 757 (i know some a.netters have access to that info, id love to know for sure), but there is a photo in the database of a NW A320 arriving in LAX with the caption stating its arriving from Memphis in December 1992. I could be in there! :)

There actually happens to be a timetable on Departedflights from that exact month.

In that timetable, NW operated MEM-LAX 3x daily: The morning and afternoon departures were 757's and the evening flight was an A320. http://www.departedflights.com/NW121592p13.html

Remember that NW didn't have that many A320's in 1992.
