BA SJC-LHR flights cancelled from June 8 until June 18

Fri Jun 08, 2018 9:15 pm

Hello pals,
I was booked on BA's SJC-LHR flight and just got an email from BA that the flight cancelled. They rebooked with one stop in PHX. I checked Google Flights and noticed BA's nonstop SJC-LHR flights are cancelled for 10 continuous days (June 8 until June 18). Why would BA cancel the route for 10 days?

Cheers!

Seems to be operated by 787-9 equipment. Possible side effect of the ongoing RR engine issues. Reminds me of how upset the BA crews are that the 747 is being retired. When asked why a crew member would love the oldest widebody in the fleet, the answer was, "Everything just works".

Thanks for the feedback. At least, I'm happy that the PHX-LHR flight that they rebooked me on is a 747 :)

Why not take the SFO-LHR instead? SJC-PHX-LHR seems less convenient.

Not if you plan to return to SJC and have your car parked there.

Wonder how much compensation airlines are getting for these groundings, and who pays. I guess Rolls. I don't understand the appeal of the 787, batteries, software, engines, and the seats in the back (where I sit) are too damn small.

NRT also temporarily suspended to Jun 28 for 789 engine mods.

Probably because the SFO flights are quite full.

Unless it is totally full, it shouldn't matter. If BA cancelled the flight, they will rebook the OP regardless of fare bucket etc. So if SFO-LHR is completely full, then not much one can do but if there are a handful of tickets (even in full fare J or Y), it should be an option.

I don’t know. They might not get anything. Airplane warranties are only for 4 years

Did you read the OP? They did rebook him. Apparently he didn’t protest the one stop routing out of SJC.

The 787 is a very expensive paper weight :)

Hi Antarius,
I actually asked for SFO-LHR nonstop instead of SJC-PHX-LHR. I was told it's not an option. The other option they gave me was cancel with full refund which was not practical for me because my flight is in 3 days from now and if I want to buy a new ticket out of SFO it will cost me much more expensive than my current ticket.

Cheers,
Alan

That, AND you get a 747 flight!
AND you get a 747 flight WITH Rolls Royce RB211 engines!
Today, such a rarity. Qantas has retired so many of their Rolls-powered birds (only OJS and OJT are left, I think!).
And that just leaves........ hmmm, I can't remember any others.

Hi AA737-823,
Yes. That's a nice surprise :). This month happened to be a nice 747 month for me:
- Last week, I flew KLM's 747 (SFO-AMS).
- Next week I'll fly BA's 747 (PHX-LHR).
- On June 27th, I'll fly LH's 747 (YVR-FRA).

Cheers,
Alan

Makes sense.

Both are alternative gateways for a larger market, both are 789s, and both require more than 1 aircraft per 24hrs....

...seems to be facially logical factors for them being selected.

Cool that you're getting on all the different carriers, but don't you want to pick one to get status on?

Maybe some avgeeks (myself included) don't give a sh*t about "status" and just fly various plane and airline combinations for the pure love of it.

It didn’t on my flight from DEN to LHR last July. The cabin in the ancient 747 was like a blast furnace and the crew (who suffered just as much as the passengers) were unable to fix the issue. Just what you want on a 10 hour flight.
