Next year I´ll flight MVD-POA-LIS-MAD-FRA because of a very convenient fare. Not a big detour, but a lot of stops on the way...

SWF-ATL-SEA (AirTran)

It was convenient to use SWF, the fare was cheap, and the connection was only one hour and added negligible time to the trip.

Back in May, I went to Houston from San Francisco by way of ORD and DFW on my first part of the trip and by way of DFW and LAX on the second part of my trip in order to rack up miles. SFO-IAH nonstop roundtrip is 3,270 miles. I ended up flying 4,668 miles, which is only 1,400 more flying miles.

Not sure if you would consider it out of the way but I've flown (and am doing it again next week) LGA-ATL-BNA to avoid flying on an RJ. Ironically the routing makes a check mark if you connect the dots as the crow flies.

Back from Queenstown I flew ZQN-WLG-SYD-SFO-ORD-IND instead of a more direct routing of ZQN-AKL-SFO-IND

It was an award ticket and were the only segments I could availability. Ended up having enough time to wander Wellington for a couple of hours and overnighted in Sydney and walked around the opera house. Saved thousands of dollars so totally worth it
IND homebase, soon to be DEN

It depends on the purpose of you when traveling there. If it's for traveling and sightseeing, you can take a longer course with cheaper price since it will not affect your trip experience.
