Airline livery you miss the most

Fri May 18, 2018 5:02 am

Airline liveries have progressively become more bland and uninspiring for years now

If you like white paint they’re a joy to behold but I find myself monotonously disappointed with almost every ‘update’

There’s still a few classics around, Singapore Airlines, JAL is not bad although too much white

The worst mistake any airline has made
was AA’s decision to ditch the iconic
‘Silver fleet’ and go to the bizarrely ugly paint job of today

The polished aluminum had a distinctive, made for purpose elegant look that was timeless and a powerful brand statement

Even with the arrival of more composite types they could have continued with a silver paint on those types, great shame

Some of my favorites

Varig

ANZ 80’s

THAI 70’s and 80’s

Braniff multi colors

Eastern silver finish

AA of course

Cathays 70’s and 80’s

Pan Am 70’s (not billboard)

British Airways coat of arms

Air France, still not bad

UTA

Royal Jordanian 80’s

SAA in the 70’s, 80’s

Air India in the 70’s

Avianca 80’s

I loved the old Continental Airlines livery, frankly. The one from the 1980s that was phased out around 1992-3.

Firmly disagree with you on AA. I go thru DFW often and the new paint job looks so much better than the old. Prior to rebranding, The new 738s were half gray paint on the undersides - the silver birds were dying.

I am glad AA chose a bolder change, vs some lame halfassed effort like United. Yes it is different and yes, I appreciate the silverbirds from old, but the old livery was dated and unsustainable.

Slapping silver paint on the composite bodies is like an old person refusing to use a cell phone. Let it go.

AA I'm mixed on. I miss the silver but at the same time I actually like the new livery as well.

I miss the tulip on UA. The current livery is hideous and represents everything wrong with the brand.

With rose tinted glasses and just the carriers still in existence. ....

Thai from the late 80s (not a fan of the purple today)
Air New Zealand. ...blue and green stripe
Air Canada. ...the one the Tristars worn
Gulf Air ...again from the Tristar era
United circa 1980s....dislike the current one bland and uninspiring

I dont disagree. And I have several pieces of scissor eagle AA memorabilia.

The problem is the newer birds werent metal. And the composite parts got painted, and they did not look the same. It looked like a poorly sown rag doll.

Timeless yes, iconic yes, practical no. And that's why I like both - the silver birds for their classy appearance and the new for the modern look. The new tails look great en masse, for example.

I really loved the Air Berlin livery on the 737-800, it just fit the aircraft so damn well! I will also miss the LH livery when it's fully phased out. Another livery I miss seeing is Northwest's final livery. Used to see all of their A320s and 757s blasting out of DTW on a daily basis.

The only new aircraft with a composite fuselage at AA is the 787

The 737, all the AB narrowbodies, 757 / 767
777 and of course The exiting MD80s all have a metal fuselage

The silver fleet was sustainable if they chose to, the livery they chose is about the

I guess you forgot the painted underside of all the 737s delivered in the last several years (like 10). It isnt a question of all composite. Their fleet was starting to look patchy.

In no particular order:
BA Landor
TWA final
UA Battleship
NW bowling shoe and silver bullet
LH before this abomination
Air Jamaica's yellow
China Easterns cheatline was timeless also and suited their flee very well. It woulve been cool to see it wavy like UAs 787s

Honorable mention:
The US/HP mashup was very well executed IMO.

First, I have gone from virtually vomiting over AA to beginning to like it. And the real aluminum had to go anyway. However the new eagle logo DOES make me want to vomit. One of the single most horrible examples of identity design today. The sissor eagle was just fine and used with the more decorative American flag tail would have worked wonderfully.

That being said: nothing has ever surpassed the PanAm globe, and I miss it terribly

I miss some form of the Saul Bass tulip identity for United

Absolutely the Landor BA

And the Landor VARIG

The Landor Northwest “symbol” (not the bowling shoe) but the “NW & arrow” in a circle was genuine genus

The angled orange Avianca

And soon the Lufthansa yellow

And the Braniff Calder planes

I can now say the most recent Air Canada(hate the new one).

The Hughes Airwest livery from the 70's - early 80s was great for how it stood out - although Spirit has borrowed heavily from it today, it remains a vivid memory from my early childhood.

KE was and remains a great livery - always refreshing to see a KE plane among the sea of white at airports today.

The worst current livery by far is LANTAM's - which looks like it was done solely with a Word document and clip-art.

I really don't get the constant bashing of the newest AA livery, especially when it comes mostly from North Americans.

Yes the old paint job was iconic, but the new one is absolutely gorgeous. Seeing multiple birds together with their tails all lined up and it is truly a fantastic new brand.

Get behind it and stop living in the past.

....but oh I miss Concorde so much.

AA really stands out. They've seemed like a shell of their former brand ever since they released the new livery. It's much more 2003 than modern day.

BA Landor livery (1980s), my all time favourite

TG 80s & 90s livery

Now that LH got that ridiculous new livery, I'll want one of the old ones back.

UA Battleship Grey

Perhaps JAL's 1960s livery...

From my side, The Varig one before the last (the one which did not have the big Varig on the side), was very beautiful. The Lufthansa before this rubbish they call it rebrand also was quite good (the old style on one of their B748s was the best).
American Airlines: I am really sorry but the actual one is absolutely garbage. My opinion but I strongly feel it is poor. They lost the Eagle (the new logo is very poor) and whatever you say, the aluminium/shiny livery was brilliant and special. Maybe they should update that rather than go to the actual grey which virtually disappear on cloudy days...
Air New Zealand - interestingly, the actual livery with the Black tail is better than the old although their All Black Livery is simply one of the most striking liveries you would see around and could be deployed "en mass"
Lan Chile's one is also a very sorry loss. it was beautiful and TAM's was not bad either (still on most of their B77Ws). On this particular note, it is interesting that two airlines with good branding and livery can merge and produce some lazy branding results. Tie Logo is good but the branding is poor.

The old Varig livery; with the Icaro mascot.
UTA; with those green doors
The old South African livery; love the cockpit painted 'bat-wing' motif.

Without doubt, BOAC. It always made people look up as it flew overhead as it matched the lines of the planes so perfectly - especially on the VC10.

Going back to my 1970's spotting days:

VIASA Venezuela, made the DC-10 look stunning, this orange tailed jet arriving at LHR from such an exotic destination (well it was then)
Air Malawi VC-10...quite a bold scheme for its day with a big font
Suid-Afrikaanse Lugdiens....racoon brow scheme on the 747SP made it look like a rocket ship
Air France...the elegant tail flick scheme, especially on the Caravelle seemed to sum up French joie de vive
Dan-Air compass....such a familiar sight to us Brits who took our first overseas aerial adventures in a Comet, 1-11 or 727
Pan Am....pre-big fonts. Symbolised perhaps more than any airline paint scheme the potential adventure of air travel in an age when it was still something to behold

CP Air with the bright orange paint and polished aluminum was stunning

Condor DC10’s and 747 with the bare metal finish were something else

And anyone remember Transtar ? Successor to Muse Air, their dark blue MD80’s were very handsome

They were a lousy airline, chronically plagued by horrible customer service issues (they canceled more than one important trip for me) and even worse operational and financial decisions on the part of management, but the Bowling Shoe livery is my all-time favorite.

I guess you forgot the painted underside of all the 737s delivered in the last several years (like 10). It isnt a question of all composite. Their fleet was starting to look patchy.

Theres a time to evolve. The circuit city route isnt always the best one.

Never saw any patchy aircraft, AA knew how to maintain that finish

They took delivery of their first A300’s in a grey painted finish, reportedly AB couldn’t
manufacture the skin to a uniform standard
but that wasn’t true, they found a way and
subsequent deliveries were all polished
aluminum

Earler aircraft were modified to the new standard and they looked outstanding

So, apart from the 787, all of AA’s current fleet could be changed back to polished aluminum, there’s no technical obstacle
to removing that obscenely ugly paint job
and doing so

I wish Saul Bass' liveries of UA and CO were still around, as well as:

- CP Air orange, red and bare metal.
- World Airways orange and gold livery of the '70s & '80s
- TWA's last livery
- Braniff - any post-Pepsi liveries
- JAS' rainbow
- Ansett flying stars and OZ flag liveries
- Australian Airlines pre- and post-QF merger.
- Air Pacific's rainbow '80 & '90s
- Dan-Air London
- Laker Airways
- National Airlines Sun King
- Western Airlines big W
I have discovered that once people are truly captivated in their ignorance, they are generally unwilling to let the facts interfere.

Without doubt, BOAC. It always made people look up as it flew overhead as it matched the lines of the planes so perfectly - especially on the VC10.

Classy and stylish, close to perfect, although I like it better on the 707.

Practically any of the 70's and 80's liveries with cheatlines are better than much of the modern day dross.

Can't say there are any old liveries I miss at all. Many of them were of their time and too fussy, and I actually LIKE a lot of the clean, minimalist livieries around now. This is the 21st century, after all!. If I had to choose, it would probably be the previous Iberia livery: it was unique, and perfect for Spain. Stateside, the old Northwest "bowling shoe" livery would get my vote, even though I have zero experience of the airline.
