Airlines that charge for seat selection in F/J?

Wed May 16, 2018 4:36 pm

I was booking a $10k J ticket last night on LX, and I was shocked when I get to seat selection that they were charging $200 each leg for seat selection. Talk about adding insult to injury...

Are there other airlines doing this or is this a LH group only thing? Is this becoming common practice given most J fares are being expensed to a corporate account?

If I were booking with my own cash then this is the sort of petty thing that would make me choose another carrier.

You do not have to pay in case you have a certain frequent flyer status valid for the respective airline alliance.

OS charge for certain "Privacy" seats on 777 routes, basically the solo seats in business class. 135-189 Euros which is waived for LH HON Circle and Senators.

Is this new? I flew LH on a standard Y ticket in December and was not charged for seat selection (whereas for a similar leg at a similar time BA wanted to charge me a full 19% of the total fare for said privilege)

I'm booked in J class on a ZRH-BOS flight (A330), and I was able to select one of the window seats (on the starboard side) that stick out closer to the aisle, at no cost. The more private ones closer to the wall were only reserved for HON Circle members whereas the throne seats on the port side were going for 149 CHF. So, only the more private seats are actually not free to select. This is on an Aeroplan award ticket, btw.

Not quite true.

Mid tier and above oneworld elites get free assignments at booking. Oneworld entry level elites get it free 7 days beforehand. Semi and fully flexible tickets also get free assignments, plus a whole host of other eligible passengers.

Seat assignments on shorthaul flights are a lot less than $100.

Sorry yes I meant for longhaul. Shorthaul is indeed less.
