Painful Nanjing (NKG) connection with China Eastern

Wed May 16, 2018 1:21 am

I recently flew LAX-NKG onward to BKK and back with China Eastern. Although the airline sold me the connecting ticket I was told when checking in at LAX that no automatic connection for either bags or passengers were allowed at that specific airport.

The process was painful to say the least. After deplaning and going through immigration we could not proceed outside to the counters. We had to wait for everybody to clear immigration, were lined up (in a military fashion) and escorted to get our luggage (I don't recall passing customs but I'm not sure as I was numbed after such an uncomfortable, long flight and tedious wait at immigration). All the time we had one or two immigration guards with us who held our passports and directed us to a single check-in counter to make a line. There, a very slow and inefficient process followed. The line we made basically was useless as the agent was randomly selecting passports and yelling down the queue to have the "nominee" approach the counter. Very poor organization, such that checking in about 30-40 connecting passengers took between three and three and a half hours.

A complete nightmare. If this is only a thing of Nanjing, AVOID IT AT ALL COST. I am pretty sure PVG handles this differently but don't see and evident difference as both are major, international airports.

Why?

Having spent 7 years in Shanghai, I can assure you that PVG is nothing like this. Although transiting in any Mainland China airport requires an extra due to the propensity for delays, airports in major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou have "normal" transit facilities.

I recently flew Bangkok-Kunming-Nanjing-Vancouver (overnight stop in Kunming), and found the stop in Nanjing to very easy. While it was same plane service in Nanjing, we did have to go through security and immigration, but perhaps the time of day (noon time) made it so it wasn't overly busy.

I’m curious, did you connect both ways through NKG, or only one way? If both ways, I wonder if the experience was the same both times.
I’ll be flying YVR-PVG-BKK on MU in December (no worries there) but returning BKK-NKG-YVR. We have a 6 hr connection and TWOV so I’m not worried about time, but it sounds like it could be an adventure at the very least.

TWOV is not available at all Chinese airports (it is a PVG and PEK). Make sure your check TIMATIC for accurate documentation requirements before you attempt to board your return trip from BKK-NKG-YVR.
