EW Chaos in CGN on May 13, 2018

Mon May 14, 2018 10:13 am

I took a flight out of Cologne on EUROWINGS. There was absolute chaos at the Airport:

- several flights cancelled AFTER the scheduled departure time (no tech reason)
- massive delays (my flight CGN - ZRH 4h)
- NO INFORMATION WHATSOEVER at the Airport. At 1700 our gate still showed "on time 1525 departure". Noone knew what was going on.
- no empathy towards passengers: casual announcement that EW 526 to BCN would leave 7h later at midnight but that noone should now leave the security area at the Airport. (the flight ended up taking off at 5:50 AM the NEXT DAY!)
- Ground staff left counters/gate not to answer questions... They had no clue who to ask for more Information and what to do.

I guess the main reason was a combination of the main runway being redone (Sat/Sun closure), plus stormy weather which made the use of the second runway at times impossible. There was clearly some reason for delays.

However, how can a professionally run Airline in DE be so unprepared and inform so badly? At least 1 knowledgeable person to answer questions in the security area PLUS some proactive info early on (it might make life easier for passengers if they can some to the Airport a bit later).
E.g., you can't tell me that they did not know of a delay of our flight at 1435 (check-in time) when the plane had just landed with 1.18 delay in Verona and there was no chance in hell to make up time with the situation at CGN. You could at least let the passengers know: we expect to have at least a 1h delay. What do you think?

If the facts are as you say, it sounds like they'll be paying a lot of compensation given the number of flights delayed more than 2 hours.

It's a myth that Germany is a perfectly well-run country where everything runs on schedule. In many areas, and this is one of them, they are much more like Italy.

Make sure to get your compensation. It's the best way to force them to learn.

There was a thunderstorm in the area (well, in large parts of western and northern Germany - just google the news) yesterday afternoon, with an official severe weather warning in place. Approx. a dozen flights at CGN had to be cancelled as a result.

The major problem with EUROWINGS these days is, that most of their operation is outsourced to other companies like Czech Airlines, LGW, Laudamotion, Brussels Airlines, germanwings, SunExpress, TUIfly etc.!
Therefore, EUROWINGS have no access to the operation of these airline - a very easy and real example: your flight is delayed by just one hour, normally no problem. BUT as the flight is operated by TUIfly B737-800, the Pilot may exceed the maximum operating hours of which EW is NOT aware of and so the flight will become impossible to operate for TUIFly. EW will need a replacement in form of a Czech Airlines Airbus A319 which might be available, but as CGN is not a crew base for Czech Airlines, a new crew has to be flown in from Prague. So the one hour delay turns easily to 5hours... And worst to come, as the A319 is much smaller than the original B737-800, 30 passengers have to be bumped off the flight! And believe me, the gate agents are the last to be informed...
