Routes between similar IATA code airports

Tue May 08, 2018 2:01 pm

What announced, existing or previously existing routes can you think of that use the same 3 letters for both origin and destination?

TSF-TFS > Treviso to Tenerife Sur
IEV-VIE > Kyiv Zhulyani to Vienna (beginning October 2018)
MAD-DAM > Madrid to Damascus (former Syrian Air route)

There are plenty in Canada:

YYZ-YYC > Toronto to Calgary
YYZ-YYT > Toronto to St. John's
YYC-YYT > Calgary to St. John's
YYZ-YYG > Toronto to Charlottetown
YYT-YYR > St. John's to Goose Bay
YYZ-YHZ > Toronto to Halifax
YWG-YEG > Winnipeg to Edmonton
YYZ-YYM > Toronto to Fort McMurray
YYZ-YYJ > Toronto to Victoria
YEG-YEV > Edmonton to Inuvik
YTZ-YTM > Toronto Billy Bishop to Mont Tremblant

There is probably a few more but these are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head, they all have regular scheduled service.

LAX-LAS LA to Vegas
IAH-IAD Houston to Dulles
ORD-ORF Chicago to Norfolk
MCI-MCO Kansas City to Orlando
PDX-PHX Portland to Phoenix
SJC-SJD San Jose to San Jose del Cabo

If Boston had a nonstop to Colorado Springs we would have BOS-COS

Nice (NCE) to Venice (VCE)
Nice (NCE) to Newcastle (NCL)
Dublin (DUB) to Dusseldorf (DUS)
Dublin (DUB) to Dubai (DXB)
Tallinn (TLL) to Berlin Tegel (TXL)

Nice one (but unfortunately unserved) would be Copenhagen (CPH) to Cape Town (CPT)

Apparently people doesn't really read :rotfl: :rotfl:

"What announced, existing or previously existing routes can you think of that use the same 3 letters for both origin and destination?"

One that's close is LRH (La Rochelle, France) to LHR, except there are only flights to STN and LGW :cry2:

Too bad there's no SCL-SLC, HNA-HAN, SGN-NGS, ADD-DAD, or even LAX-LXA

Dublin (DUB) to Budapest (BUD)
Glasgow (GLA) to Geneva (GVA)

Folks, this is really simple. Read the OP again. The criteria are simple: same 3 letters must be used in each airport code. Thus, for a given airport code, there are only five possible answers.

For example, for DUB: DBU, UDB, UBD, BDU, BUD. Thus that last one is valid, as there are DUB-BDU flights (nice job, PatrickZ80). GLA-GVA doesn't work. There is no L in GVA's airport code.

Another valid one would be HA's seasonal OAK-KOA flight, for example.

I think in the future a feasible one could be FOC-FCO (Fuzhou-Rome).

OVS is a Russian airport that has flights to both DME and VKO in Moscow, but not to SVO!

I know this doesn't fit into OP's criteria, but seeing CZ's CGO-CGQ flight over my apartment in Beijing on fr24 made me check again to see the letters every time.

Because of the increasing trade and tourism between China and Indonesia, I think there will be a CKG-CGK route in the not-too-distant future.

Damn, beat me to it!
Why is flying so expensive? And why is flying well so much more?

According to the Wikipedia, FX (FedEx Express) flies between ANC (Anchorage Ted Stevens) and CAN (Guangzhou Baiyun).

SAN-NAS can probably go on your list of not totally outlandish but also not terribly likely city pairs.

Same goes for Durango La Plata (DRO) to Chicago O'Hare (ORD). Unserved, but certainly possible.

Not sure if there are any charters or not (Wikipedia said that there are, but it's Wikipedia), but one that make sense also is DJE (Djerba, Tunisia) to JED (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia), especially around Hajj.

Again unserved but possible is Timisoara (TSR) to Stuttgart (STR). I could see Ryanair or Wizzair on this route.

Yes, indeed.

On a slightly different note, I wonder whether anyone ever flew SNA-SAN. It wouldn’t have been out of the question during regulation.
