Flights between cities of same name.

Fri Apr 20, 2018 5:40 pm

Are there any direct flights between Old World cities and their similarly named cities in the New World? Such as New York and York, London and East London, Perth (Oz) and Perth (Scotland)?

I can’t think of any.

You'd think an ULCC would do BHM-BHX, in range of a narrow body surely, and the money you'd save on only printing and recorded announcements at each end would be massive.

I would argue MHT-MAN would make more sense.

YXU (London, ON) pop approx. 400,000 is just too close to YYZ for direct flight to LHR or LGW.

There may have been business or charter flights between YXU and LHR/LGW/LCY.

But anything can happen in the future for scheduled/commercial service. :)

True, there is a somewhat large market between them as MHT is an option for the Boston area. Cant see much of a passenger connection between Birmingham in the US and Birmingham, GB.

No flights between my hometown of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada (YQL/CYQL) to Lethbridge, Victoria, Australia (no airport code). Boo.

Except for the San José example above, I think the most probable service (although it's no longer the case, since the airline in question was blacklisted by the EU) between identically named cities would be BLA-BCN (Barcelona, Venezuela to Barcelona, Spain). This route was actually planned to start operating this year.

Considering the proclivity of cities named "Springfield" in the USA, one would think that at least one such pair would be linked. There's 33 according to Google, with some states (Wisconsin and Ohio) having more than one!

None spring to mind with linked air service, though.

I agree, MHT would be better, but it doesn't have any immigration facillities, so that's why I'm suggesting BHX, and of course 'cos it's far sillier, MHT-MAN does actually make sense, there probably is enough people to fill your plane!

Also maybe BA could open LHR-YQG, just to annoy the DTW boosters? (Heathrow is Windsor airport more than London right?)

Imagine how weird it would be if there was a flight between SJO and SJC.

Nope, they don’t.

SJO is San Jose, Costa Rica

SJD is San Jose del Cabo, Mexico

AS does not fly SJC-SJO.

Not quite the answer to the question, but similar. I could imagine Iberia (IB) flying to Acadania airport, New Iberia (ARA). That would be confusing, flying Iberia to Iberia.

Not in English though, but Matsuyama in Japanese character is exactly the same as TSA (Songshan) in Chinese character; and CI flew between the two cities before, although it was a charter. Not sure if the flight still exists though.

Apparently CI even did some sort of celebration for the flight: https://web.archive.org/web/20131016164 ... 000846.htm

I never heard of Lima, Chile. Unless you actually meant Lima, Peru.

BTW, I dunno if this one was mentioned: Panama City, FL to Panama City, Panama.

Nor between my home town Sydney, New South Wales, Australia to Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada but wow what an ULH that would be!
BTW: Lethbridge, Victoria does have an airport but no scheduled services or IATA code: Lethbridge Airport, 3429 Midland Hwy, Lethbridge.

I clearly remember on the news a stupid couple who flew to SAL (San Salvador-El Salvador) instead of SSA (Salvador-Brazil) where there was 2014 World Cup games which they were planning to watch.
Thankfully they decided go back home when they realized how dumb they are.

Just for reference:

If it does count, then there's also CLT-CHO, Charlotte to Charlottesville, served by American Eagle.

Kind of a stretch, but the City of Long Beach on Long Island is practically adjacent to JFK (it's part of the barrier island you see when you're on approach for runway 31L/R) which has nonstop flights to Long Beach, CA.

Well, if Delta continues its relentless neglect of DTW, :stirthepot: :duck: maybe DTW-GRU will be shifted to MSP-GRU. St. Paul to São Paulo! Same name, different languages.

(Yes, I know this will never happen.)

Vancouver BC is close enough to Vancouver Washington that a puddle jumper could land at Vancouver Washington's general aviation airport.

If Downsview airport in North York (part of Toronto) had commercial service we could have North York to New York, that'd be cool!

Sadly Singapore, Michigan* (about a hundred kilometres northeast of Chicago across Lake Michigan) no long exist or else one could conceivably fly from SingaporeAsia to SingaporeMichigan on SingaporeAirlines.

Air Canada, Alaska and Ameriflight all fly to Vancouver from Portland and seeing how Vancouver, WA is right across the Columbia river, you really could argue that you can fly from Vancouver, WA to Vancouver, BC.
