Surprising comparative distances between airports?

Sat Apr 07, 2018 3:07 am

Can you think of any surprising examples of airport A is closer to airport B than to airport C?

For example, some examples in the U.S. ...

PNS is closer to EVV (Indiana) than to MIA (and EYW):
http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=pns-eyw,+pns-mia,+pns-evv

Furthermore, it may seem counter-intuitive that JFK is closer to SEA than to PDX:
http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=jfk-sea,+jfk-pdx

Any others?

I think it's because we tend to consider more on the latitude of the location than the longitude. For example, CHC is actually closer to SYD than AKL although it's more southern.

LAX is closer to LAS than SFO.
SFO is closer to HNL than LAX is.

A fun side item - the straight-line path from LAX to SEA goes directly over Reno, NV.

I guess you beat me to it, but that's the one I've always found counter-intuitive, that SFO is closer to, well really all of Hawaii, than LAX is.

Another fun side item -- the westernmost point in the US is not in Hawaii like most people assume, it's in Alaska.

Exactly and on a map, longitude, especially the further away from the equator you go, is distorted.

My surprise is JFK-JNB vs. ATL-JNB. I mean JFK is further east but it is also further north, but even though it *looks* like it is more north than atlanta is more west, it isn't. By a lot!

The British version of this that seems to surprise a lot of people. Edinburgh is further west than Carlisle.

Not quite distance related, but fun fact about latitudes:

SFO is 37ºN, AKL is 37ºS
LAX is 33ºN, SYD is 33ºS - not only that, but they are both 33º56'

Thank you all for the responses!

I think that many Americans would be surprised to learn that Washington, D.C., is not their closest national capital.

A broad swath of the U.S. is closer to MEX than to DCA:
OKC: http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=okc-mex,+okc-dca&DU=mi
DEN: http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=den-mex,+den-dca&DU=mi
PDX: http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=pdx-mex,+pdx-dca&DU=mi

While YOW is the closest national capital to a large section of the U.S.:
BOS: http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=bos-yow,+bos-dca&DU=mi
BDL: http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=bdl-yow,+bdl-dca&DU=mi
FAR: http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=far-yow,+far-dca&DU=mi
SEA: http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=sea-yow,+sea-dca&DU=mi

Not to mention a small section of the U.S. in which NAS or HAV is the closest national capital:

JFK-CMN is less than MIA-CMN.

More generally, the closest US state to Africa is Maine.

Also, ELP-SAN is less distance than ELP-IAH

I was surprised to discover that Oslo - Dubai is 20 miles less than Amsterdam - Dubai. How is that possible if Oslo is almost 600 miles north of Amsterdam? Then you look at http://www.gcmap.com and there's the proof of it.

Amsterdam - Zurich is precisely one mile less than Zurich - Vienna. To me Switzerland and Austria seem about the same distance away from the Netherlands (my home country). It felt the two cities were closer together than Zurich is from Amsterdam.

Maybe more commonly known to Bostonians, (Because of a ton of advertisements by both WW and FI), but BOS is closer to KEF than BOS is to SFO, LAX or SEA.

PDX is an interesting one not only is Washington D.C. is the third closest national capital, but Mexico City and Ottawa are both equidistant at 1,953 nm.

Well, if we use the Prime Meridian as our reference point, Guam would actually be east. But I guess what I really meant was that Alaska was the westernmost point in the 50 US states.

SYD closer to CPT than JNB

On a different note, picked up interesting comparison of JNB-ATL and JNB-NRT being exactly the same distance (or 1 mile out) and looks like ATL and NRT is close to the same latitude, so the routes look like a mirror-image of each other also.

If you flew from Auckland to Seville in southern Spain, you would fly about 400 miles further than if you flew from Auckland to Madrid. The Madrid trip would route you over the North Pole so it is closer even though it is further north. Strange stuff hey?

I still have a hard time with the fact that Lisbon is actually further south than New York.

Also, Kansas City is closer to New York than Key West is despite Kansas City literally being halfway across the country.

I know a lot of people who don't realize how far west ATL is. They think of Georgia as a "coastal state" and therefore assume ATL is due south of, say, PHL. It's actually almost due south of CVG (Covington KY is less than 15 minutes of longitude farther west than Atlanta GA). ATL is almost 3 degrees of longitude farther west than CLE and over 9 degrees farther west than PHL.

Another one of those funny side notes. Years ago snopes.com published a story about some photo that was circulating, and in the article they described the location where the photo was taken as being in "Southern Georgia, near the South Carolina boarder". A bunch of people emailed them to "correct" their article, thinking that anyplace near the South Carolina boarder must be in Northern Georgia, and the site's owner shared some of these emails on their message board (which is how I know about them). In reality, Georgia is more west of South Carolina than south, and Georgia's northern boarder actually boarders North Carolina and Tennessee.

Having grown up in Idaho, it was surprising to realize that BOI to SAN is almost due south.
Also a surprise to realize that SLC-MIA is shorter than SLC-BOS.
Most of my favorite examples are already posted (JNB-ATL/JFK, HNL-SFO/LAX).

Quite surprising, HNL-ANC is only a couple hundred miles more than HNL-LAX. It’s not less, but surprising that it’s in the same ballpark.

Nothing to do with aviation per se, but interesting to note that Panama City on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal is actually east of Colon which is on the Atlantic side of the canal.

And of course, Detroit is north of Windsor, Ontario.
