Old livery "holdouts"

Mon Apr 02, 2018 3:30 am

What are some aircraft that still wear an airline's old livery despite a new livery existing for several years already?

Here's a couple I found:

G-VYOU

F-GSPO:

That VS livery became obsolete in the mid-2000's, and the new AF scheme was introduced in 2009.

As of early January this year Qantas still had thirteen aircraft flying in the 1984 livery that had been replaced in 2007.

Indeed VH-OJA was retired in 2015 without ever getting the new livery, which was understandable, but several aircraft that left the fleet earlier did receive it.

Air China and I hope they don't change it. Looks fantastic on their 748s,

I agree Air China is a good looking livery but it is not the same as the topic of this thread.

On my travels in New Zealand last December I noticed a few NZ 772s and Q300s were still in the Blue/Teal gradient livery which was replaced about 7-8 years ago.

The VS example in the first post is particularly impressive in that VS have had TWO liveries since then!

There was a time in the early-mid 00s when if you flew Delta you'd have no idea what livery out of 3 you might get!

United had some planes in battle ship grey and the white and orange livery for quite some time as well.

Ha! I remember that. As a kid I used to play a game anytime I flew UA, wondering which livery I would get. Same with which of the DL liveries I would see. With UA that game lasted until 2012 or so after the CO merger.

Are there still a few American planes in the old livery? Do they still have the MD-80s? I know they didn’t repaint any of those.

Frontier and Spirit also have about three different ones. I still see the old bold FRONTIER jets, alongside the flyFrontier.com ones, and of course the Saul Bass resurrection. And with Spirit, we all know that story...

I always enjoyed seeing the holdouts. I remember seeing one of the last battleship tulips around 2011, or bowling shoe NW jets in 2008 or so. Those things were relics then, even with chipped and faded paint.

Yes, AA still flies MD-80s. None of them have been or will be repainted. However, all the other mainline aircraft feature the new livery.

That said, I saw 2 CRJ-200s at ORD a couple of weeks ago that were still in the old white with red and blue cheatline American Eagle scheme. It looked dated, but I still miss it.

Three Delta liveries.

Qantas have that now too. 1984, 2007 and the new 2015 one. All are currently on planes.

Spirit is also or was recently flying three distinct liveries.

There's a few Malaysia Airlines 737-800s still flying in the old colors with the red and blue cheatlines and 1990s titles.

Air Canada Express/Jazz still has a few aircraft in the old multicolour leaf livery before the branding transition from AC Jazz to AC Express. I flew on a CRJ-200 in these colours back in October.

I still see some of the IB340s in the old colors. EC-JLE, EC-JNQ appear to be the two frames.

I believe the only AA aircraft left with the old shiny silver are some 737-800s. Everything else seems to be repainted.

Except for all of their MD-80s.

In 2006 S7 Airlines had 8 distinct liveries: green S7, classic Siberia Airlines, Aeroflot style, white, Vnukovo Airlines, Baikal Airlines and 2 different Perm Airlines liveries.

Yup my bad. I've actually also seen some E140's and CR2's still in old paint

Actually, besides the MD-80s, all mainline AA aircraft are in the new colors, as of February I believe.
