Airports dominated by freighter planes (other than MEM and SDF)

Sat Feb 10, 2018 12:01 pm

Just wondering which airports see "more" cargo planes than scheduled pax planes? "More" is not strictly defined, could be number of departures, or a surprisingly large cargo area compared to the pax operations, etc.Memphis and Louisville are obvious, but which else?

I can think of

    Liège
    Oostende
    Eldoret
    maybe Anchorage?
    relatively large for cargo: Luxembourg
    Rickenbacker/Columbus
    Mirabel

Which others?

Definitely Zaragoza (ZAZ) in Spain, East Midlands (EMA) in the UK and Leipzig (LEJ) in Germany.

AFW (Fort Worth Alliance) is an all-cargo airfield. Indianapolis (IND) is the hub for FedEx's domestic operations.

Frankfort-Hahn (HNN / EDFH) comes to mind, although Ryanair has a number of flights there.

Rockford, IL (RFD) is another one.

CVG is a hub for Amazon Air and DHL Aviation.

DFW is home to a UPS Airlines hub, and in addition, there are also several foreign air cargo operators that do fly big cargo planes to DFW. FedEx does also operate flights out of DFW, and FedEx has a package drop-off facility at DFW.

FedEx also has a major hub at IND in addition to its MEM home base.

SHJ (Sharjah) would be another.

GSO is a FedEx hub for the mid-Atlantic.

Rockford, IL (RFD) is another one. It gets scheduled flights from G4, but is dominated by UPS and Amazon Prime Air ops.

DFW is anything but dominated by cargo operations as the OP asked

Prestwick (PIK) in S.W. Scotland is now mainly freight-oriented, I believe

Miami, Florida might be close to what the OP is asking...I spot there once a month and there have been times where I have seen more cargo planes landing and taking off (during the day) then passenger planes.

At the most Prestwick only has about three cargo flights a week as the airport has lost a lot of cargo flights over the last few years and Ryanair are expanding at Glasgow with just a limited flight schedule remaining at Prestwick which far outweighs any freight flights at the airport.

Come on klm617

I expect more from you, can't you use the IATA codes like everyone else has done on this topic as I had to actually google that not being familiar with it as you obviously are :-)

Navoi (NVI), Uzbekistan also qualifies. A few passenger flights, but mostly cargo.

Edit: Huntsville (HSV) is another one.

DHL's main global hub is Leipzig-Halle (LEJ), an airport rather in the middle of nowhere otherwise notable for a distinct lack of traffic. The yellow bunch will see upwards of 100 daily departures, whereas the passenger side might see a dozen - if that. Which is far less than even ANC. LEJ is also the home base of the An-124 contigent, operating on a permanent contract to NATO.

Putting DFW and MIA up as options is a bit daft, as whilst both airports see a large amount of cargo, it is still dwarfed by the passenger operation. Might as well put HKG and FRA up there ...

I totally agree with your last comment :-)

Yeah I have to admit that there have been some ridiculous suggestions regarding airports!
