Airline companies with similar liveries

Sat Feb 03, 2018 4:20 am

Hi! I see no one has opened a post about this before so i should as well...

Not counting subsidiaries, I wanted to talk about airlines around the world with similar liveries to others.

Off the bat the obvious one that comes to mind is Copa and United...

Air Canada and Delta..

in the old times, Eastern and Air America

Prinair's was somewhat similar to that of Iberia's back then...

What else?

Delta and JetBlue, but pretty much only when you see the bottom of the plane from a distance, I guess you could sort of add BA to that list too, although I've found BA blue to be slightly more distinguishable from JetBlue and Delta blue

Can't find the perfect photo to showcase my point, but you get the idea

Additionally, to the untrained eye, Transaero and Air France, but mostly just the tail

Allegiant and Jet2Holidays have to win the award for similar liveries, hands down

Beijing Capital, Hong Kong Airlines and Hainan Airlines are all very similar

Tarom and LOT

COPA and United

The new Lufthansa [cargo] and FedEx?

Copa and United aren’t similar, they’re virtually identical. There’s a good reason for that, though, so I’m not sure it counts.

There is a good reason why Allegiant and Jet2Holidays is similar as well (hint if you are curious: look up source of first Jet2Holiday jet that was under short term lease).

Jet2 leased a 757 from Allegiant, flew it in a hybrid scheme, decided they liked it, and reached an agreement with Allegiant to permanently use their color scheme. As it is, LS and G3 have subtlety different tail designs.

Sure does! AFAIK Copa was never United's subsidiary, right?

Continental formed a strategic partnership with Copa in 1998 that included a 49% ownership stake that CO later increased to 51%. Both carriers conducted joint marketing activities and as part of this CM participated in the OnePass frequent-flyer programme and adopted a variant of the CO livery.

CO drew-down their stake over time (to 27% after the CM IPO in Dec 2005 and further to 10% after a follow-on offer in 2006) but the livery remains.

I know I'll just be reposting my own contribution in this other thread linked above, but for me there is an uncanny similarity between these two:

Iberia (especially IB Express)

Avianca

The fact that both of them got their new liverly not too long ago, one might get some suspicions about the degree of creativity at the conctracted design studios ;)

EDIT: bogota beat me to it

I actually like the Copa livery better than United. The Copa one looks more modern. I just wish United would get rid of that awful globe and go back to the tulip.

Somehow the new Lufthansa livery looks a bit similar to Iran Air's livery with its all white and dark blue (almost black) color combination.

While it's not an airline I think there has to be an honorable mention for Southwest Airlines and South West Trains.

I found another set of carriers that look suspiciously similar:

vs

vs

General paint scheme between the first two is pretty close especially considering that violet isn't exactly the most common color for airline liveries.

While Wingo's fuselage isn't painted as much as the others - what's up with that little dash on the W? The designers must have had the exact same idea for both Wingo and WestAir...
