Airlines in need of a new or revised livery

Fri Jan 26, 2018 2:54 am

I was just looking at pictures and thought that a number of airlines need either a new or at least revised version of their current livery.

What are your thoughts??

Airlines that cater to mind

UA (I think they need a whole new look)
JAL (I know they went back to their old livery not too long ago but it needs a re-work)
ANA
LH (I know it's been talked about)
AF (their current livery is stuck in the 1990's)
CA (same problem as AF)
KE (getting old)

AF didn't they just update the livery a couple of years ago?
I really like the JAL scheme, it's so simple.
Air China is back from the 70's when they were CAAC it still works in my opinion.

Call me crazy, but I actually like CA's current livery. There's something about that utilitarian look and feel to it that makes it beautiful.

Gave a whack at a UA rebrand, incorporating old UA and CO themes.

No airline NEEDS a livery change. But for a change, UA, WS, JL

SQ's livery hasn't had a major change since they were first founded. If any livery needs an update, it's sure as hell should be them!

And ANA don't need a livery change. JAL only needs to add the cheatline ala their old livery instead of the Eurowhite.

Air China, I like the livery but I think it’s time for s change. China Eastern (I know it’s “new” but come on now”) JAL needs some paint on the fuselage.

Westjet... badly. Getting increasingly fed up with their incredibly boring paint, despite advertising themselves as all young and hip.

I love this!! Harkens back to the Saul Bass 80s/90s Tulip theme....good mix of retro and modern! This would be awesome; I've been thinking for some time that United should bring back the tulip.

Continental. The livery is almost 30 years old and they've been misspelling their name on the fuselage since 2010...

Couldn't agree more! They've grown so much in the 20 years since they started with a couple of old 737-200's with the exact same livery! Although they did incorporate a maple leaf shape around the 'mountain logo' when they began the Gatwick flights a couple of years ago. The pale green has got to go, even their cabin interiors are drab, plain and dated, certainly nothing hip about them these days.

While I do like that United concept, I don't think there should be any nod to either airline in a new scheme. It should be something neutral so that everybody can get behind the "New" United. There are enough retrojets flying around to honor the past

Agreed. United trashed Continental’s image not long after they trashed their own. Time to move on...

7. Disagree

I second that.

I'd love for the old widget with the word Delta on the top blue part to come back to Delta's tails, albeit with a new look on the fuselage.

And let me add to the aforementioned airlines: Vieques Air Link should get something more colorful, perhaps more "Puerto Rican". doubt it will happen with the economic situation and all, being that paint adds to the gas expenses and all but.

I love Cubana;'s livery, but its about time for them too...

LOT and KLM on the European side. UPS.

Royal Jordanian..

IMHO, MU has the worst livery of a carrier for its size - the colours, the details (or lack thereof) and the fonts, are appalling.

How can companies pay and accept this from a marketing bureau? Who needs photo-shop, when you have MS Paint '95!

I agree. Their old cheatline livery certainly could have used an upgrade, but I'm not sure allowing an intern to design the livery on Microsoft Word was the answer.

As a UA employee, I would LOVE to see the Tulip return. The current Death Star/UNITED design just doesn't work. However I agree that the best thing for everyone involved is to have a completely new design going forward (as opposed to all of the current employees on BOTH sides looking backward).

I disagree with others with regards to SQ's livery. Over the years, it's been changed a little here and a little there including the shade of yellow changed to the present gold color and what they have now is absolutely fantastic, very elegant and timeless.

As for WN, I have mixed feelings about their current livery. Their desert colors with the mustard yellow/brown weren't that bad. The Canyon colors were terrible. The present livery is decent. The handful of planes that they've kept with the original scheme, the desert gold livery actually looks quite good. What a difference just a change in shade can make from mustard to gold.

As a current frequent flyer of UA, I agree it needs to change. I would love to see the tulip come back.

First, I am not fan of the "throw any colors together" method of Flybe (Purple, Orange, Red and White) or Southwest (Blue, Red, Gold).

Second, I really am not a fan of Alaska Airlines tail image. It just feels politically incorrect somehow. Although I guess in that case I have to dislike Hawaiian too. They are basically the same concept.

I guess I'm not a fan of people's faces on a livery.

In which case, color me a big thumbs down to Norwegian.

Rumor has it that changes are coming with the 787s and a new livery/branding is one of them.

I just really dislike the current livery, as well as their previous one. I don't get why they colour a plane with a blue palette when almost everyone associates Egypt with the desert (yes I know the Nile is the basis of Egypt civilisation) but the colour's just don't work (and I am also aware that Horus' head is blue but come-on) Sorry if this offends anyone, this is just how I feel about it.

And also for best livery change I think should go to Asiana from the beige, black and brown colours to the yellow, blue, red and grey which somehow works ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

easyJet. It’s only a few years ago they introduced the new colour scheme but it’s still nauseatingly hideous.

I appreciate they had their hands tied and were limited due to the brand owner’s strict brand guidelines (so strictly it took him nearly 20 years to realise the eJ branding was ‘wrong’) but it was a wasted opportunity.

The new mask of Zorro / Michaelangelo from the Teenage Mutand Ninja Turtles paintjob is horrendous.

Why so many people here think SQ needs to update its livery? It's fine, especially it looks different from the mainstream nowadays. I just want to see the logo back on the fan cowl.
JAL needs to add something to the livery by the way, as it looks dull.

I'm with "atsiang" on this. If anything, I see SQ's livery and branding for that matter as a textbook example of how a brand has created value in consistency.
Their livery doesn't look dated at all to me. It draws its elegance from being simple and versatile. From the time SQ had narrow-bodies in their fleet to their 380s, every plane in their fleet wore the livery well. The same applies to their keris/kris logo on the tail. Having kept it consistent over the years has given the Singapore Airlines brand a sense of timeliness.

From a graphic design perspective, I think KE and SQ are iconic and timeless. Wouldn't touch them.

I like WS, but it's feeling very 90s. UA has a complete stinker. (Love the comment that "Continental" has been misspelled...) I'd change these two, but that's probably it.

Ryanair! They could charge a premium for seats on flights operated by a/c in the new/revised scheme during the change over period.
