no need to pull out laptops before sending bags through xray machines.
Is this normal now at LAX or just due to huge lines ?
If normal, why do we need to do it elsewhere ?

LAX is designated TSA technology and procedure incubator site.
Besides PreCheck lines being able to leave laptops in bags, there are ongoing trials of new scanner equipment that will allow similar for other passengers.
