787 too hot and humid?

Sun Jan 14, 2018 6:28 am

I recently flew with ANA on the 787 for the first time. It was noticeably hot and humid onboard the plane, to the extent that very few passenger actually could sleep (it was an overnight flight) and many people were sweating. Numerous passengers complaining, only to be told the cabin crew couldn't do anything and that it was normal to be so hot. This was made worse by the lack of personal air nozzles. Is this really "normal" with the 787, or did I just have a bad experience.

Cabin temp is nothing to do with the 787 and everything to do with the airline. Japanese, and some other Asian airlines are notorious for this. Culturally its generally desirable for Japanese to have warm indoor temperatures. You will see it set in the low 80s frequently and they can be quite stubborn to deviate from this. One of the few negatives for flying with them. This is a frequent complaint of westerners.

Hot and humid like a ......
I think it would be a complaint a few Asian airlines would get from westerners indeed. They need to please their dominant demographic first so you just need to dress appropriately, light clothes, no need to use the blanket.

But it is not the 788, I flew it with Virgin Atlantic and they maintained a very pleasant crisp temperature onboard. You will get used to Asia and learn to dress for the weather.

I had a similar experience with JAL (waking up in a pool of sweat) but not on a 787. It’s an East Asian preference thing

Same thing on a JAL B743 ten years ago and on CX [to a lesser extent] 2 months ago. It's not a B787 thing.

100% correct and strongly seconded. I've noticed this in the past on ANA and JL both, and have had this discussion with Japanese colleagues. I have worked for a Japanese company in the past, and can say that indoor temps in the office during the summer were noticeably higher than what you would experience in a more typical American environment.

On that note, flying back on an AA 787 from LHR last year, I thought the cabin was much too cold!
