Short connection in Amsterdam, possible?

Mon Jan 08, 2018 3:12 pm

Is it realistic to make a 45 minute connection in Amsterdam from the B concourse (almost certainly from a bus gate) to gate D06 (the bus gate for flights to the UK)?

And speaking of which, where is D06 even located? It doesn't appear on any maps :?:

That's right and only if everything goes smooth, no delays etc. D6 does exist and is a non schengen bus gate. So if you arrive from a schengen destination you will need to clear immigration and depending on the day that could be busy.

Thanks. Does that mean I have to pass through the passport control under the Park Cafe?

If your flight into AMS is from somewhere within the Schengen Area than yes, you will need to pass an emigration check.

Indeed that's where you pass immigration. There is a short connection lane otherwise just jump the queue and explain.

I did a connection from D to B gates in 12 minutes in December, so it is definitely possible, but I'll count that as an exception.
But I have also done some connections between 30 and 60 minutes arriving at B gates with a bus and going on to D06. It is doable when you are going the direct way and the signage is pretty good. There are a few points which you should know in advance, just to be sure:
- as mentioned before, you will need to go through passport control. There are electronic gates before the D gates, but they are not always in operation. The regular check points are divided into EU+several countries and all passports, and include a short connection lane for everything leaving within the next 30 minutes. If queues are long, it may pay off to wait 2-3 minutes until your departure is within that timeframe - or you just explain it to the person calling out the times.
- You can find D06 - which is actually several gates, D06 A to K if I'm not mistaken - turning right after passport control, taking one moving walkway and then sharp right again to go downstairs. I call it "Little Britain" sometimes as there are only flights to smaller UK airports departing from there.
- Sometimes there will be a passport and boarding pass check downstairs before you get to the doors, sometimes not. It's hit and miss, but normally fairly quick.

Thanks for the help, it will be useful.

I have been through AMS many times, but always intra-Schengen. On a few occasions I had to transfer from the schengen D gates (those on the upper floor) to the B gates (or vice versa), and it was always extremely tight on the short 45 minute connections. At least I have a rough idea of where to go, which is useful since I haven't been in the non-schengen part of the airport for 15+ years.

You might make it, but any checked bags might not.
