Shortest or least expensive B747 route

Thu Dec 14, 2017 10:35 pm

Need some help. Anyone know what might be the current shortest or least expensive B747 route being regularly flown in the world. Since I was not selected to participate on the Delta farewell tour next week I’ll just take my own trip. As I am retired all I can hope for is a trip leaving from a DAL served station so I can non rev there. Thanks.

The technically most-correct answer at the moment as far as I know - though perhaps not really useful to you at all - is FRA-TXL and vice-versa, for which some trips at the moment are being operated by LH using the 744 to cover for AirBerlin's collapse, but this will be ending quite soon.

Beyond that you will probably need to look for something trans-Atlantic with BA, VS, KL, or LH.

I'm assuming you worked for Delta. Can't you non-rev on a KLM 747 from the US to Amsterdam? I know they still fly 747s to Chicago and New York (not sure about other cities). Or a VS 747 to LGW.

I believe Virgin is operating ATL-MAN with the 744 next year.

TPE-HKG is 502 miles and has many, many widebodies. For example, 3 different airlines flew 744s on that route today, some more than one.

Not true for passenger configured. I don’t think there are any HKG-TPE B747 passenger flights.

Pretty sure Air China has several daily 747 flights between there. Up until this summer they also had A340s.

CI still operates sometimes 744 on the TPE-HKG run.

Otherwise for some short and cheap flight, Thailand is a good place. You have some 747 on BKK-HKT and BKK-CNX. Also Don't know if they still do it, but KE was using them on domestic flights between GMP and CJU. KE often operates them on short northern Asian routes.

A bit more complicated but AI operates AI965 between BOM and HYD three times a week on 744 too.

Air China also operates 744 on some domestic flight PEK-SHA being one of them

I can assure you that Air China definitely does not have several daily 747 flights between HKG and TPE or any A340 flights either.

British might still operate some 747 flights within the Caribbean.

The best deal on a 747 I've seen lately is on KLM. ORD-AMS $476 roundtrip, Nov-Dec 2018

Korean Air has 747 flights from HKG, LHR to ICN. LHR varies during time of the year. BA depends on season has 747 flights to IAH, KL and Atlas Air have year around 747 flights.
You can fly Air India 747, LH as well, KL also does LAX with 747. Virgin from MCO to LGW. Kabo Air has 742 and 744 flights. Mahan Air still has 743 flights. Then there Saudia.

Thanks for all the options. I forgot about the Virgin and KLM possibility.

For shorter flights, CI@TPE is your best bet. They run their 744 to HKG, ICN, CAN, BKK, and CTS just from a random search.

There's also BKK with TG, to HKG, HKT (I don't think CNX has anymore 744, though), ICN, CTS, HND (NRT and KIX are on A380 I believe), and SIN.

And like someone already mentioned, there are 744 on PEK-SHA (I think 2x daily on CA) and occasionally on other PEK-originate trunk routes (CTU/CAN/SZX).

It's BRITISH AIRWAYS I know how much the citizens of the USA like to use BRITISH same way that they use MATH rather than the correct name as in MATHS or MATHEMATICS anyway I digress.

British Airways have not operated 747s on a regular basis to or even within the Caribbean for well over twenty years. They are all operated by the 777s based at LGW except for Grand Cayman and Nassau that are flown from LHR.

From 1998 till 2002 British Airways did operate a single Caribbean flight once weekly with a 747 on LHR to BGI.

the problem seems to be that equipment swaps are really frequent. quite difficult to target a particular plane on a particular flight:(

Thrice a week between Hyderabad and Mumbai on Air India's B747-400.
Fairly cheap, and with that you get a meal, Star Alliance miles, 25kgs baggage allowance.

Back in the early '80s, 2 guys chartered an Air NZ 742 and marketed "Fly the Dream" - a 1 hour sightseeing flight from AKL for NZ$285 (USD150). As I worked with a guy who was mates with the charterer's I got it for NZD100 i think. It was sold out and a great time had. The Pilots stayed on after landing and everyone had the opportunity to visit the cockpit. I believe that was the cheapest 747 flight I ever had....
