Preferred Carrier to Japan ?

Wed Dec 13, 2017 9:40 pm

Next year I will be taking a trip from SAT to Japan!!!!

Just wondering about inflight experience from DFW to Toyko on the 18 hour journey. Anyone have any prior experiences for coach class? I'm debating either AA or JAL....
Any comments would be appreciated.

JAL has one of the best economy classes in the world. But its likely going to be more expensive. The 787 is in an 8 across configuration which is a much more comfortable configuration than AA's. I have flown both from LAX and I would fly on JAL any day.

SAT - IAH - NRT UA/ANA or just drive to Houston and take ANA. ANA is 2 - 4 -3 in economy interesting layout. ANA is good airline.

Though if you still going with one world with JAL and AA, then stick with JAL.

Lots of knee-jerk votes for JAL, which I understand. But you should know the seat metrics on the metal you're most likely to fly:

AA: 772, pitch 31-32, width 18-18.5
JAL: 787, pitch 31, width 17.5

Not massive differences, but AA has the advantage (given you fly the more common layout as above)

With that seat pitch and width it's not like you're going to notice any difference unless you're really tall. I'm 1,94 meters myself and I easily fit in a 30" pitch seat so all extra space is just air. When it comes to catering Japan Airlines has the better product for sure. Likely more expensive, but otherwise fine.

There is however one more option worth looking into, that's Aeromexico. Aeromexico Connect flies between San Antonio and Mexico City and from there you can connect to Aeromexico flying to Tokyo Narita.

I took JAL 001 SFO to HND in January on 77W. I would seek out this aircraft with it's Sky Wider seats in economy, 3-3-3 across. Good space and service.

Both JAL and ANA send their internationally configured aircraft on long haul to US with the economy seat pitch about 34 inches. I flew ANA and they had 2-4-3 configuration and their seats were sliding not reclining and each had a foot rest. I liked the idea that nobody would recline into my face and you could adjust the seat to your most comfy positions. Their service was impeccable.
