Delta A330neo - fleet speculations

Thu Dec 07, 2017 7:26 pm

Delta will receive their first Airbus A330-900neo in 2019. This aircraft will be replacing some of the older 767-300ERs, along with the existing Airbus A350.
However, when compared to the A350, the A330neo is a lot narrower. On the A330neo, you can fit 8 seats at 18-in width per row in economy, whereas you can do the same for 9 seats on the 350.
Because there are reports that the aisles of the A350 with Delta One Suites are very, very narrow, I am speculating that Delta will not install these seats on their A330neos. Rather, I think they will be installing a possibly revamped reverse herringbone seat, which is already present on their current A330s (which are very private but have outdated hardware installed).
For economy and premium select, I think they'll go with the same seats that they have on the A350 right now (Recaro CL3710 model for economy and recaro PL3530 in premium select).
Also, does anyone has any registration info for the A330? I presume DL will go with the N8##NW model, just like with their existing A330s. They've only ordered 25 of these, so they should be able to fit them within the N8##NW format.

Interesting thoughts on the J seat that will be installed. DL is an airline that does not have any issue with fitting different J designs across the fleet in order to maximise the space in each particular aircraft type.

It mostly works because all WB J seats at DL are full-flat and have direct aisle access. It is clever and very sensible, except if we are discussing brand consistency. I think consistency becomes an issue when an airline "marries" a certain type of seat (usually a revolutionary, or at least evolutionary one). Seeing the fanfare and such surrounding the Delta One A350 J seat (or suite), it might be harder for DL to get away with a significantly different design in another newly delivered aircraft.

I just flew (as a passenger) two flights on the DL 350 in the suites. And yes, the aisles are very narrow. The galleys don't have a lot of room either so if a D1 passenger wants to get from one aisle to the other by using the front galley while the FA'S are prepping meals, its a huge pain in the a$$.

So, I think its been reported on here that DL is going with the D1 Suite on the 767-400 aircraft. Correct me if I am wrong but the cabin width of the 767-400 is 15.4 feet. On the A330-900NEO its 17.3 feet and on the A350 its 18.5 feet. I can see the suite fitting into the 339 NEO but not the B764. It will be interesting to see what eventually happens.

Interesting. Guess they'll be keeping it similar to the 76Ws they are replacing.

I think the A350 business seats will also be installed on the 777s, but the A339NEOs will have a different business class seat. I look forward to the official announcement as the induction date gets closer.

They will have a 34xx fleet code with N4xxDX or DN registrations. The first one should be N401DX, followed by N402DN.

The N1xxDN format would clash with the 763ER fleet regs.

I think it could be the Zodiac Cirrus NG for the A330neo. It is an evolution of their current A330 seat, and is better in every way. Or the Waterfront, which is reverse herringbone and has sliding doors, to keep up with their A350/777 J

IIRC DL's A350 installed Thomson Vantage XL seat (just adding the doors). The same seats are being fitted onto A330s of QF (launch customer), SK, MU, SA & Rwandair. They all retained 1-2-1 config on A330s.

QF also installed then on 789s although their cabin is narrower than A350's.

So I personally don't see much issue fitting onto A330s. Maybe just the door thing will need to be finalised.

I certainly hope they go with the Panasonic waterfront. It will be available in 2019, the same year the first A330neo is supposed to go to DL.

I find the Waterfront concept very interesting. However, I have been unable to find any size specifications on it besides the 79 inch bed length.

Will it have the same pitch as many current reverse-herringbone-style seats or will the pitch increase? Does anyone know or can anyone tell from the pictures? Once doors are attached, will it not be too much for the A330 cabin width?

Can doors be added to current generation reverse-herringbone J seats?

The 763ER fleet starts at N171DN. The majority of N1xxDN numbers under that are available for use. Delta has reserved the lower 22 numbers of both the N1xxDN and N4xxDN range. I had presumed the A321s would be in the 400s when they roll past 399 and A330s would be in the 100s, but it's plausible that it could be the other way around. In any case, the 3400s are the only tail number range remaining starting with 3 and whichever fleet gets the 100s is going to need to start a new thousands digit.

I believe the OP means that the A359 and A339 are both replacing the 763 on some routes (if any).

It seems to have about the same footprint as the B/E Super Diamond, so I think it could fit the neo. But I'm not sure.

thanks for clarifying. I could have sworn that seat was a recaro though...

UA is retrofitting a somewhat tweaked 1-1-1 configuration of Polaris on their 763s, so I wonder what DL will do for the Suites on their 764s.

The Waterfront design would be a great way to offer a “downsized” version of the Suites, without compromizing seating capacity.

Seeing how the 764 retrofits won’t start until 2019, and I haven’t seen any real official word from Delta on the 764 Suite retrofit, I think Waterfront would be better. A great product, without having to compromise seating capacity.

But does the Waterfront suite take up the same (or a similar) amount of space as a traditional reverse-herringbone seat? I have been mostly unable to prove anything about this either way... anyone have any more info?

There's also a possibility that they might go 1-1-1 in J like what United did to its 3-class 767s...
Also, to answer your question, based on my knowledge of the Waterfront as well as pictures of it online, I would assume that it will take up the same space (or even less) compared to any average reverse herringbone business class seat today. I could be wrong, though, as I obviously don't work at B/E Aerospace.

Waterfront actually seems better than the current Suites. It has a 24-inch screen (vs 18''), larger seats, seems to have quite a bit more storage, and wireless charging, massage functions and I think even temperature control integrated into it as well. And it was designed with the doors so I guess it also has that advantage.

I am seriously rooting for the Panasonic Waterfront. Not much has been said about it since it was introduced in 2016, but they said it should be ready in 2019. Another thing: Is it just a coincidence that in all the photos/videos I found of the seat, the screen read DL31: London to New York? I may be reading into this a little bit too much, but Delta 31 is a real flight from LONDON to Atlanta! Now I don’t know what DL was supposed to stand for, or if they just needed something as an example, but I bet ATL/JFK-LHR-ATL/JFK will be regular flights for Delta’s A330-900neo fleet. Same goes for AMS and CDG. These are my predictions and what I hope to see for Delta’s A330neo fleet:
-ATL/JFK-AMS/CDG/LHR-ATL/JFK, primary routes
-Delta One: 1-2-1 Panasonic Waterfront
-Premium Select: 2-3-2 A350 Premium Select seats
-Economy: 2-4-2 A350 Economy seats

Delta has N102DN through N122DN reserved with The FAA according to their website. N123DN and up haven some listed as on HOLD without naming who. N101DN is already taken by a single engine aircraft. I can't find other suffixes including NW reserved by Delta. Some are already taken while others appear to be available. N101US is available. :old:
