How likely is one to get Secondary Security Screening Selection (SSSS) flying through IST?

Sun Dec 03, 2017 9:45 am

I have heard that SSSS is triggered by any number of things such as Int'l one way tickets, booking last minute, etc. However, I have also heard that flying through IST specifically triggers it almost every time. I haven't flown through IST myself, but was wondering how likely one is to get it compared to LHR, FRA, CDG, DXB, DOH, AUH, etc. The only time I have gotten it was at LGW a couple months ago, but never had it other than there.

Such a pathetic system... but anyway, I doubt that TK would be such a popular choice for US-Israel travel in particular if it were to automatically trigger SSSS. Any idea why it was triggered when you flew through LGW? What if you've been to airports like BEY or THR?

It is an indicator on your boarding pass that shows you are a "Selectee", which means you get pulled aside for extra security inspection over the usual. I don't know if that still includes another security check at the gate.
Certain things in your reservation status, form of payment, one-way, how long before the flight did you purchase, similar name to someone on the know-fly list, etc. trigger it in the booking systems, engaging with Homeland Security's Secure Flight data.
You don't want to be a selectee. If you are, don't dawdle; head through Security as soon as you can and get to the gate early. And good luck not being the last to board on an open seating flight.

Just use it to your advantage. Present yourself to the first security guard you can find with the SSSS code, and he/she will most likely escort you all the way past the queue and screen you right away.

Yes from my experience getting SSSS'd actually helped. You skip the whole TSA queue and the only extra things they asked me was to turn on all my electronics and they do the explosive residue search thing, that's all. (Got SSSS'd 3 times total)

You can get SSSS on TK, it can happen anyone going anywhere. Happen me from AUH, LGW, CDG, and DTW.

As said above, used intelligently the 'SSSS' on your boarding pass can be used to get you through the security ordeal much faster.
