"Alaska Airlines has made this announcement on their Alaska Airlines blog:"
"Alaska Airlines will put limits on “smart bags” starting early next year."

"As of January 15, 2018 any bag powered with a lithium battery or lithium battery power bank will need to follow these requirements:"

"Smart bags will be allowed as carry-on baggage, if they meet carry-on size limits and if it’s possible to remove the battery from the bag if needed."
"If the bag will fly as a checked bag, the battery must be removed and the battery must be carried in the cabin."
"If it’s not possible to remove the battery from the bag, the bag won’t be allowed on the plane."

After Alaska Airlines, which is the next airline to follow in similar footsteps with the smart bags the Lithium batteries

It's not just AS. AA & DL announced the same today and UA scheduled to announce next week.
From the desert to the sea, to all of Southern California

Ok, I give up! What is a "smart bag" and why does it require a battery? Never heard of it.

I think it follows you around the airport without you having to pull it behind you. Which doesn't seem like such a good idea to me.

It is luggage that contains a battery and USB-A ports to recharge consumer electronics. Some also include GPS (for tracking), weight sensors (to ensure the bag is within airline weight limits) and remote locking.

Thanks, all. I maybe could see some use for carry on bags but for checked bags???

I’m really glad to hear these won’t be hanging around in the cargo holds. Seems like a safe and logical rule. Are these rules in place in other countries as well?
