Sydney to Antartica, and back, with Qantas

I didn't know they did this, a couple of days a year the travel company charters a 747 for the day trip. Qantas have just 4 pilots qualified to do this route.

Did it once for New Years. The views are good, but its very expensive and you're only looking at it from the air, only left me wanting to actually go and set foot on the continent.

Better fun to have is to watch for the positioning flights necessary to get the 747 out from SYD and back when they do the Antarctic flights from PER - they're almost always available to the public at normal fares.

I think you should save your money until you can afford a small ship cruise from Ushuaia to the Antarctic Peninsula. Then you see it from sea level and have a chance to land on an island or the mainland.

Actually there's one airline that flies to Antarctica. That's Aerovias DAP. It's no regular service, but they operate charter flights between Punta Arenas and Villa Las Estrellas. The last one is the only commercial airport on Antarctica. Flights are operated with a BAE 146-200. Here's more information:
