Routes with the most frequencies...?

Tue Nov 14, 2017 5:53 am

When I think of routes with the most flights per day, LAX-SFO and LAX-SEA come to mind (at least for the U.S. west coast). I'm sure there are routes with more frequencies than the two examples I've stated above, but with that said...

What current routes (worldwide) have the most departures per day...?

I counted 28 passenger airline flights between HNL-OGG, all of which were operated by HA (based on info from Flightaware). I did not count any GA or cargo flights.

As noted above, Seoul - Jeju holds highest number of daily frequencies. But this makes me wonder if there could possibly be demand for a seasonal nonstop Los Angeles - Jeju flight considering we see twice and triple daily services (depending on season) LAX-ICN with KE and OZ, for example.

I did a quick check on POS-TAB by BW on 22 November: 19 flights, first departure at 0055, last departure at 2245. These are 25m flights operated by 68-seat ATR 72-600s.

Yeah, I totally forgot about Seoul-Jeju. That route definitely has the most...

About 70 flights between Mumbai and New Delhi
Air India (B787, B777-300ER/200LR, occasional 747 along with the A320 family)
Jet Airways (one A330-200 in addition to the many B737-800/900/900ER services)
GoAir, IndiGo (exclusively A320, the neo might be iffy given their engine problems)
Vistara's A320s, and SpiceJet's Boeing 737 family.

So I pulled both metro area to metro area and airport to airport from OAG for a sample week in November 2017 (and these are both way)...

Metro to Metro:
  1. LA Metro - SF Metro: 2887 flights per week or 412 flights per day (avg).
  2. Jeju - Seoul Metro: 1563 flights per week or 223 flights per day (avg).
  3. Rio Metro - Sao Paulo Metro: 1351 flights per week or 193 flights per day (avg).
  4. Melbourne (incl. Avalon) - Sydney: 1219 flights per week or 174 flights per day (avg).
  5. Sapporo Metro - Tokyo Metro: 1115 flights per week or 159 flights per day (avg).

Airport to Airport:
  1. Jeju - Gimpo: 1563 flights per week or 223 flights per day (avg).
  2. Melbourne Tulamarine - Sydney: 1147 flights per week or 163 flights per day (avg).
  3. Mumbai - Delhi: 933 flights per week or 133 flights per day (avg).
  4. New Chitose - Haneda: 885 flights per week or 126 flights per day (avg).
  5. Fukuoka - Haneda: 870 flights per week or 124 flights per day (avg).

I have the full list and data so happy to answer any questions about this one specific data set.

In November 2017, it remains LA Metro to San Fran Metro (51,297 seats per day both ways) or Seoul-Jeju (43,209 seats per day both ways). Depending on whether you want metro capacity or airport capacity.
