Longest Q400 Flight (as of 2017)

Mon Nov 13, 2017 1:14 pm

Stumbled across this data lately and it seems to be highly debatable:

http://info.flightmapper.net/flight/Aurora_Airlines_HZ_4610

HZ 4610 is a domestic flight from PKC - UUS operated by a Q400.
Total flight time is shown as 3 hours and 20 minutes, beating the previous record by 10 minutes!

Galileo GDS shows that flight as 820 miles. ET use the Q400 on some ADD-KGL services - shown as 964 miles.

I would say it's probably BE with SOU-AGP, that may be a summer flight only though

Eurowings have started using ex Air Berlin (still in livery) Q400's between DUS-GLA, not the longest route but a good example of a longish Q400 journey which billed as 1h 45mins, appears from observation of the last few days to be taking a full 2 hours. There's also the Q400 services from Iceland to Aberdeen and Belfast.

The Air Baltic flight Riga-Brussels is right at 2:30. With the CS300 it is 30min shorter.

Just for fun, how long would that be on an ATR-72? 3hrs? (If it has the leg)

Most certainly the longest over-water Q400 route : PDL - LPA, Ponta Delgada - Gran Canaria, 904miles, 1452 km, flew it twice this year on SATA, almost 3 hours, a bit eerie 3 hours in a Q400 with nothing but ocean below.

The longest flights I know about in ATR is MLN-LPA operated by Air Nostrum for IB. It is seasonal route with 890 mile distance to cover. I think it is close to 4 hours in duration.

For a similar effect, Flugfélag Íslands (for Icelandair) BHD-KEF - 873 miles, block time 2h55m.

Re: Longest Q400 Flight (as of 2017)

Mon Nov 13, 2017 3:30 pm

There are a number of "long haul" Q400 flights in Europe that push (or exceed) the 1,500 km/800 NM mark. Air Iceland flew Reykjavik-Kirkenes, a great circle distance of 2,275 km/1,230 NM... there's also the Keflavik-East Midlands run that's 1,725 km/930 NM. Further south, Austrian has Graz-Rhodes at 1,575 km/850 NM - while Luxair flies the Q400 over the 1,520 km/820 NM from Luxembourg to Catania. Air Baltic's longest Dash flight - if I'm not mistaken - is Riga-Brussels, 1,440 km/780 NM.

A typical high-speed cruise on the Q400 is 340 kts/630 km/h - but winds (especially in winter) play an important role in determining flight time. I'd once done a 1,100 km/595 NM run in just a tad over three hours with a stiff headwind... and one hour and 45 minutes on the way back.

I’d be curious what they’re using for alternates at PKC and UUS. All the ones I can think of are a long ways away

QX flew the Q400 on LAX-LAP. That's at least 750nm or over 800 statute miles. It was over two hours. It was on of the longer Q400 flights schedules.

Should be around 3:15 - 3:20, maybe as much as 3:30.

Not the longest though, cargo operators fly even further. My personal record on the ATR is about 4 hours for a scheduled flight, 6 hours on a non-scheduled. For passenger scheduled, I regularly do 3:30 flights.

I actually flew KGL-ADD on a DH4 in February. It was fine - you really did not nice you were on a prop (other than the slower flight time).

The Porter Airlines Toronto City-Melbourne,FL has a usual flight time of 3:10. That always seemed way too long IMO, teeth would be rattling after that flight haha

I'm not aware that QX has ever operated the Q400 from SNA-PDX. When was that?

QX has operated the Q400 on FAT-SEA, and SBA-SEA though.

OAK is the farthest destination in CA QX flies PDX-originating Q400s. They used to fly SJC but that's been mainline/E175 for a few years now. OAK going mainline Dec 1. SEA-STS (618 mi) still all Q400 though.

That was in a 747, admittedly.
But I felt like posting it, and it's hardly any less relevant to the question the OP asked than MOST of what has been answered.

Yakutia fly a weekly YKS-KJA service with the Q400 - 1,367 miles and blocked at 4h 20m. They have a bunch of routes over or around the 1,000 miles mark - they really stretch its legs.

As mentioned Air Baltic also operate some long sectors on the Q400 - several 3+ hour routes in the past.

QX did SEA-FAT with a Q for awhile on one of the two daily flights. I flew it once I understand they've also done SEA-SBA as an equipment substitution for a CR7.

I remember the 6am SJC-PDX flight was a Q400 in the not too distance past. Seems more recent than a few years.

Well look at that. So the new winter seasonal YOW-MLB on PD appears to be second longest.

Yikes, Looks like it's all CRJ-200 now until March 11 when the Q400 improbably returns. I expect that schedule will change though as we get closer and another update rolls out.

Actually LAX-MFR was pretty recent. I actually thought they still flew it.

QX once did LAX-EUG on a Q400 and might still do LAX-SUN.

All long routes but not the winner.

Now thats a nasty flight. Almost 5 hours in an aircraft without a proper galley (no ovens, no coffee maker etc.), in a noisy turboprop :melting:

Better than an inter-island steamer once a month taking, at least a week, to reach PPT! :-)

In Norway, Widerøe has their longest flight Bergen-Tromsø at 665nm / 1250km, blocked at 2hrs25mins on the Q400. They have even used the -300 when loads are light. FR24 has shown flights close to 3 hours when the winds are nasty. It's a popular route and will be upgauged to the factory-fresh E190-E2 next year.

I don't know if it's the longest but this summer I flew from Hoedspruit (HDS) to Cape Town with a South African express Q400: it was about a 1000 miles flight.

The longer the better for that flight. I did it 20 years ago in a jet. The wintery scenery below is stunning.
