Favorite two airliners currently in service

Thu Oct 26, 2017 2:33 am

Hey guys! My post in the photography forum was removed for some reason not sure why, but what I was saying is that I'm thankful that I am near the approach to EWR and have all sorts of aircraft fly over my house. However, not all airplanes strike me with as much awe as the MD-80 and the MD-10,MD-11, I'm really going to be sad the day McD aircraft are no longer in the skies. I'm curious to hear your replies!

Below is a link to the planes I shot, with some honorable mentions included

I just don't know what about the McD aircraft do it for me, I know for the MD-10,11 the aft placement of the wings just gives it such a unique look.

Well....he said CURRENTLY in service. None really left in the USA...so after the 727s were retired, the MD-80 became my favorite.
That simple.
But basically for the same reason....T-tail and LOUD !

There is only one, the Queen of the Skies. I dread the day the last 747-400 will be retired.

An-148 and Il-62.

Gotta love those Russian jets (and thanks to Air Koryo for flying them instead of the boring B777/A330).

The 752 looks like such an athlete when it passes by. Im sure you've seen the video of the RNZAF do a high speed pass followed by a 90 degree bank.

There is one, W8246, its a freighter that runs every night from Bermuda to EWR, it sounds like nothing else when it passes over

Man, this is tough to decide!

MD-80 series. Those JT8Ds on takeoff are unlike anything else nowadays with the possible exception of the DC-10/MD-11.

Then I'd say the 787. It looks so different compared to anything else. The jagged nacelles (I know, the MAX and 748 also have them), the wing flex, even the nose!

A380 and 747
A350 worth a mention....nice to fly and they do at least stand out in a crowd

Awesome response man! I agree! I was driving north on the turnpike along EWR, and I saw an MD-88 begin its take off roll, rotate and climb at what looked like 3500fpm+. The smoke trail was the most beautiful thing.

I get to see the A380 pass over at about 18,000 feet descending towards JFK, it is just so immense. But the greater wing sweep angle of the 747 is what gets me.

737-700 and the 757-300. Just some oddballs with cool features.
Actually I prefer the 77W and 789, but right now I’m in a 73G and 753 mood.

1. No question 747-200 (aside from military planespotters production list states there are a handful of civil freighters still active. If not I'll settle for the dash 400)

2. Hard to decide leaning towards the A350-900

What makes you pick the -200 over the 400? Also my buddy from Malaysia just sent me a picture of the -100 he has in his bone yard. It's epic

I live in the suburbs east of Sacramento. Sometimes A380s heading east after departing SFO fly over head. Because of their immense size it's easy to mistake them for smaller aircraft departing from the much closer SMF until you notice the number of engines.

To answer your original question:
1) MD-80. Well really the whole MD-80/90/717 series, but if we're limiting it to one variant then MD-80.
2) It's difficult to just pick one second place, but I think I'm going to go with the C-Series. I've never flown on one yet or even seen one in person, but it is the newest, most modern narrowbody, a plane I hope will be successful and one I hope to fly on someday. If the MD-80 represents the past, the C-Series is the future.
