9hrs 15mins MAD-JFK. But why?!

Mon Sep 11, 2017 7:50 pm

Looks like AA 95 took a whopping 9:15 to fly from MAD to JFK today. No idea why - I was on DL210 today and we cooked right across the pond on a southern track in a zippy 7:09. IB 6251 took a southern track too, and IB 6253 and UX 92 are both enroute now on southern tracks with average 7:something flight times. So what happened with AA?

Thanks in advance and happy flying!

It looks like they flew up north on a non-ETOPS route. My best guess is that they had some maintenance deferral that restricted ETOPS operations. Rather than wait to fix it and cancel the flight, they probably deferred something and went non-ETOPS.

EICAS computer placarded which restricted it to non-ETOPS operations only. 60 minute routes need to be within an hour of GLA/KEF/SFJ/YFB so that means a very long routing. Flight would likely have cancelled or delayed overnight trying to fix it in MAD. JFK is a maintenance base for AA so it makes sense to get the plane back to JFK rather than have it stuck in MAD.
