Airline workers share 17 things they wish passengers would stop doing

"The first step to becoming a better traveler is knowing what you're doing wrong."

"But, since travel tends to bring out the worst in people, having that kind of self-awareness when you're trying to catch a flight can be a feat for even the most well-mannered, frequent fliers."

I am sure there are more then 17 items, but is a start

I'll admit to have done a bit of stretching in the galley.

Who cares about what airline employees dislike about passengers? Passengers are the customers (who fund their paychecks) , like it or not.

How about we start a list of things airline employees do that passengers dislike?

I would think you would given that those people determine the quality of your experience, if your bag gets there or not etc. Treat them like shit and thats exactly what you'll get.

Nice attitude there
That list wld annoy me as a fellow passenger and as a person with common courtesy for others. And I would gladly check you since an employee couldnt. Do as you wish in your own home or car but not a shared experience.

Oh .. .so you're saying that if a passenger is found somehow distasteful to an airline employee, that justifies the employee to mess with and delay a passenger's bag?

Its OK for an airline employee to deliberately give a passenger a bad experience if the passenger somehow misbehaves?

Airline employees are CUSTOMER SERVICE providers, pure and simple. As such, a certain amount of keeping your mouth shut and dealing with the frustration of people who are travelling IS part of your job. That goes for agents AND flight attendants. If you call yourself "aviation professionals", that means acting that way.

My colleagues in the customer service department refuse to deal with passengers that arrive at the desk or gate whilst on their phone, or with passport in the mouth.. they ask them to step aside, or to open it themselves, respectively..it's basic manners.

From a passenger point of view I'd be horrified if I witnessed some of these things, and I have had the bare feet on armrests thing courtesy of a woman behind me on a 12 hour flight. I had the urge to 'accidentally' elbow her in the foot.

I would add smelly foods like McDonald's or Burger King.

That is quite common in the US (a bit less in Europe even if it is not the first time this has happened to me) and it is disgusting. As a passenger, I hate that McD distinct smell all over the plane.

Interesting .... it's actually quite common to see easyJet flight attendants step onto passenger seats to arrange bags in the overhead bins with their shoes on, or Iberia flight attendants reading the paper (???) in the galley thereby obstructing the entrance to the toilets, or - again - easyjet flight attendants addressing their business passengers with "darling".....

Certainly, an airline employee should not deliberately send an item of baggage to the wrong destination simply because he/she doesn't like the passenger's attitude. If proved, it would be a serious disciplinary issue.

However, employees do have the right to "deliberately give a passenger a bad experience" if the passenger wilfully refuses to carry out a lawful order, is abusive or threatening to crew or other passengers, and adversely impairs the enjoyment and safety of the crew and other travellers. By deliberately giving a passenger a bad experience, I mean off-load and/or report the incident to the police. A passenger off-loaded for bad behaviour should not be entitled to a refund or any further assistance as he/she would be in breach of contract.

Airline employees are paid by the airline, not directly by the passenger. It is the policies and directives of the employer that they must carry out and not simply humor some self-centered, arrogant and ignorant lout. Yes, they are customer facing but they have to face all the customers on any given flight and not just those who are so ill-informed as to imagine that the world revolves around them and behave accordingly. Being frustrated does not give you carte blanche to treat employees like dirt.

Go ahead, you can start your list. I would gladly contribute even as an airline worker myself.

But you will always be a customer in your life, as well as a service provider, and even then, it doesn't mean you have to deal with people treating you like shit. I hope you don't behave in a rude manner in every situation just because you pay for something. Everyone should be respectful with each other.

When agreeing to purchase a ticket in a flight you are also agreeing to abide by all crew member instructions, posted signs and placards, and rules/regulations. Now in this case the only ones that really applies to that agreement are both the intoxication one and the one on violating seatbelt sign. The rest are just things that should not happen anywhere in public and would be avoided with common sense and a little personal hygene. The airline industry is one place where the customer isn't always right for quite a few reasons, the main one being that the customer generally does not understand the rules nor the operations or airlines and air travel and they do not realize that the fine print requires them to agree to abide by these rules. What also doesn't help the cause is people that needlessly blame it on the front line worker calling them a liar or whatever because of their own ignorance (yes I have seen this happen before) or the people that go looking for a lawsuit.

I will leave you with one final remark, you pay taxes to the government, but that doesn't mean you are allowed to break the law or violate the constitution.

A lot here that's just pure ignorance...

1st yes it's a customer service business until safety is in jeopardy then it's about safety and not about what your royal highness wants. When you purchase a ticket on a flight, it's agreed upon in the contract that the airline will provide you safe transportation in return you must abide by all regulations (FAA,TSA, TC, etc.). If you can't act like an adult, take the school bus.

2nd I have no idea about the whole employee messing with a bag thing... If it's happened to you, I'm sure you've just got a guilty conscience and assuming that your rude treatment to airline employees caused this when in reality it probably didn't.

3rd, please stop flying if you really are this bad, take your own transportation where you can jeopardize your individual safety and leave everyone else out of it...

Look, I get that some airline employees have become short and no longer treat people the way they used to however, it's a chicken and egg arguement to which I blame the anti-authoritative attitude that most passengers take these days for zero reason (like crowding the boarding area when Zone 1 is called and they're waiting for Zone 5). I believe that a lot of passengers think they own the airline and the rules because they paid a measly fare that alone doesn't mean a lot to the airline's revenue. For example when the seatbelt sign is on, the flight attendant or pilot isn't the one that is commanding you to return to your seat directly, it's the legal body that really requires your compliance hence they say SHALL comply with placards, signs, etc...

You can go ahead and argue with us all you like about what "rights" have been violated, I see it as whining myself. Better yet, you become a crew member and show us how it's done properly!!!

I always try to mind my manners and treat everyone with respect, even if I've had a really bad day. There has been once or twice where I've nearly lashed out at someone, be it gate staff, air hostesses etc, and I realise that they're still human too and it isn't their fault that I might not make a connection or my bag isn't there, and they could be having a bad day and me taking out my anger on them is only going to make their day worse.

Also some of these things are absolutely disgusting. Clipping your own toenails and putting your feet up on other people's armrests? What crazy person thinks that's acceptable in close proximity to another 150 people?!

Being on your phone during the safety presentation? I'm sure these are also the people that would sue the airline if their plane crashed and they were burned because they didn't bother to listen to the people telling you what to do if you crashed.

On a flight from Beijing to Munich, there was a woman one seat behind me on the row across from me who got out a chicken that smelt like it had been cooked in some Traditional Chinese Medicine broth and slowly picked away at it for half the flight. If you didn't already know, TCM has to be the worst thing I've smelt that people actually consume.

One of the few reasons that my journey that day wasn't a particularly enjoyable one.
