Airlines you wish the 747-8I saw

Tue Aug 22, 2017 4:50 am

Sadly only Korean Air, Lufthansa, and Air China are the only major airlines flying the 748 for passengers (excluding private aircraft), with Arik Air dropping its two commitments and Transaero ceasing to exist. I think the 748 would've been a nice fit for the latter; huge country (in terms of land area), huge plane.

Qantas is probably my top pic, with my second probably as Air France. Bummer they (QF) didn't order any considering their fleet was all 747s at one point and "boasted about it", as if they were so proud of having them.

If it weren't for the a380, maybe we'd see more of them.

Basically anyone who fills a 747-400 fleet regularly = I hate seeing an aircraft swap reduce capacity when the higher capacity is being filled.

British Airways and KLM would be my top picks. Especially British, since they have a huge fleet of 747s that needs to be replaced.
Delta and United maybe in the US.
Air France could definitely justify it.
Qantas could justify it, but I don't think its the right fit for them.
China Eastern, EVA air.
It was an excellent choice for Korean.
And surprised Qatar didn't order any, they seem to love ordering random new aircraft every time one is announced.

Honestly I think it's got a lot more viability than the A380, but maybe its just not efficient enough.

I think BA's replacing their 747s with a3510s (or whatever the abbreviation for the a350-1000). I'm not familiar with load factors :S .

And ANA.... I was a bit disappointed when they placed an order for a few a380s; I called them "chubby-chasers" .

BA UA QF KL and SU.
I was hoping SU would pick up the Transaero order. Those would be some good looking birds!

CX - I doubt the livery will look good on it however. But to each it's own.
PR
OZ - I would look smart in the old brown livery IMO.

Any airline. Don't care which one.

Personally I would love to see KLM colours on the 747-8i/8F at my home airport. Even better if it were 747-8M's.

Every airline. Best looking plane ever built. If I were a billionaire, I'd purchase a brand new one.

It's part of the deal for ANA to bailout Skymark. If not, I doubt ANA would even get those A380s. But since they have to pretty much get them, they would put it on the most logical route (HNL<->Japan).

As far as which airline, CX/SQ to start with, then UA. Of course, JL/NH buying 747-8D and putting 605 seats in those (Well, NH still can pull off the 868 seats A380 pipedream and put them on HND<->CTS/FUK/OKA :stirthepot: )

I'm almost certain that ANA will take the A380's, they have created too much hype about it all. Its not like Virgin who are keeping their A380 order hush hush.

I would have liked to see Boeing roll out a brand new 747-8i for British Airways in a retrojet scheme of Landor colours.

Maybe if Boeing had offered the 747-8i with the Trent engine (the 7000 would be a close fit) it could just have been enough to tip the scales for BA.

Cape Air, Boutique Air, PenAir, and FlyBe.
Or Copa Aorliens and Alask Aorlines for Europe Service... I mean amiright??
In all seriousness I think they could be cool for BA, AF, JL/NH, QF, CX, maybe EK/QR/EY, etc.

We got to see the 748 in BA colors briefly (748-F) but would have liked to see the-i in their fleet.
Wish EK didn't cancel their 748-F's, would have been nice looking aircraft
Would like to have seen it with UA, CX, and CI, all of whom I really thought would order it when it was first on offer. But the times they are a changin'

I would of loved to see a Singapore Airlines B747-8I as I generally quite like their livery.

I think that due to NK's current all airbus fleet, an A380 would be much more appropriate. Mind you, they would have to get Airbus to add two sets of exits to the upper deck and one or two more sets to the lower in order to facilitate their 28" seat pitch slim lines with 11 abrest in the lower deck and 9 on the upper that they would do. Don't worry, they have the profits to convince Airbus to do it!
But seriously, could you imagine Spirit getting A380s with 1,000+ pax operating DTW/JFK-MCO, LAX-SEA, or whatever routes have a lot of passengers currently?

I can certainly imagine it. Of course, it'll never happen, but I get a little kick thinking about it high density, ULCC-style widebodies.

This is a pipe dream, but I would have loved to see DL operating a 748. Or even better, to see one in NW colors, both the bowling shoe colors and the last livery. I second CX, SQ, BA, and QF.

In the US:

United. They were the ones most likely to buy it, they have a very strong Pacific network like Northwest had, and they have been flying 747s for almost half a century since the type was introduced in 1970.
Northwest, if they had stayed alive. For the same reason, which I mention above for United.

In Europe, in addition to Lufthansa:

British Airways. They are a major 747 operator and they have the largest 744 fleet in the world.
Air France. To fill the gap between the 77W and the A380.
KLM. In fact, KLM was thinking of buying it, if it was offered with the option to be converted to a Combi (pax/cargo) layout.

In the Middle East:

El Al. They have always been loyal to Boeing.

In Africa:

jSouth African Airways. They were at one point the largest 747 operator in Africa and has flown all variants except the 100. They have flown the 200, 300, 400 and SP variants.

In Asia, in addition to Air China and Korean Air;

JAL. Yes definitely JAL. They were at one point he largest 747 operator in the world. I'm still surprised JAL didn't want it.
Cathay Pacific. They already fly it as a freighter so adding the passenger version would have made sense, especially that they have a long experience of flying 747s (200, 300 and 400 variants).

It seems to me that United would have been the most likely candidate in the U.S.

Well Qatar Airways currently have two Boeing 747-8F aircraft in their fleet in full Qatar livery leased from Atlas.

So including Air China, Korean and Lufthansa we also have Qatar albeit the latter being a freighter.

UNITED, UNITED, UNITED. They were the last of the true 747 US airlines. I presume that they knew what they were doing when they decided not to order them, but I still can't help but think that the 744 served them so well for so long, that it couldn't have survived again. And since we are in a "only if" kind of post, it would have been amazing in Saul Bass and Tulip!

Definitely KLM. The big, blue 747 is simply iconic. 'American 767' alluded to KLM considering the aircraft - it's a real shame that it was never offered as a Combi.

Although, the 747 is a FIRST CLASS bird. I couldn't picture her with JUST 2 classes. The nose or the top begs for something fabulous.
