Is VCV publicly accessible?

Thu Aug 10, 2017 3:15 pm

It's always been on my bucket list to wander around and look at vintage (retired) aircraft that were parked in the desert. Everyone knows VCV is the place to do it. Is it possible to just drive up and look around by yourself or do you have to make some sort of arrangement? If you can look around yourself, where is the publicly accessible entrance to the "yard?" All contributions appreciated, thank you.

There's no public access.

There are dirt tracks around the perimeter, but you need a 4x4 to get round.

Probably best option is to rent a plane from somewhere like Apple Valley and do some circuits and touch-and-gos.

They should charge $30 and offer supervised tours. Can't imagine volunteer guides would be an issue to find

When you say rent a plane, can you expand on that? Assume a pilot to fly a few circuits/ At what price?

Mojave is unofficially accessible.
Everytime I have been there for work, it seems the FBO employees will take a "tip" and drive folks around in their pickup trucks looking at the stored planes.

Alternative? I happened to pass by Kingman, AZ (IGM) on a recent road trip through the US, and stopped for a while to take a walk along the perimeter. Was very happy with what I saw! Some old DHL DC8's, Kingfisher 727, Magni 732 etc. Dozens of more common mainline equipment, some partially cut up.

No need to get 'inside' - many interesting planes (DC8, 727 etc) are parked right next to the fence. Unfortunately, there's some barbed wire fence (not the main airport fence!) straight across Mojave Dr. just before you get really up close and personal with the oldies. This basically means you can't drive all the way around. But if you're skinny enough to squeeze through the fence between two wires, you can walk (like I did) ;-)

Re VCV, no way. It's an public airport, with security like any other operating airport. Most the retired/stored aircraft are
directly adjacent to the 15,000' Runway 17/35. Some aircraft could be returned to service, so airlines/manufacturers
would not want someone wandering around.
The airport is used for a lot of other things besides aircraft storage, like charters, aircraft maintenance, (UA has acft
painted there), engine swaps, etc.

There is an airport between Phoenix and Tucson that used to allow escorted fans into the boneyard, by prior arrangement.
Can't recall which one it is.

IIRC, that's Marana... which is now accessible since Evergreen went BK a couple of years ago.

Okay so can you park up and walk along the fence at Mariana? If so where would it be possible to park?
