Top US Airports Ranked By International Destinations

Thu Aug 10, 2017 12:15 am

Hadn't seen this put together in one place before. New York's and Miami's (Miami+Ft. Lauderdale) combined airports dominate the other cities (even though many locations are duplicates between JFK/Newark and Miami/Ft. Lauderdale).

1. New York JFK 125
2. Miami 106
3. Los Angeles International 90
4. Newark 85
5. Hartsfield Jackson 76
6. Houston IAH 70
7. Chicago O-Hare 67
8. Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood 62
9. Dallas-Ft. Worth 56
10. Boston Logan 55

On my reckoning London Heathrow manages 195 international destinations on the current timetable. Whether that's more than Istanbul I don't know.
If you follow the same convention of adding non-duplicate international destinations that the original poster suggested for New York and for South Florida by just adding London Gatwick you reach 291. London Luton and London Stansted will probably provide a few more relatively obscure Central and Eastern European destinations.

A bit surprised tha IAH made as high as it is or even made the top 10, with a respectable 70 destinations.

Here this link provides another perspective. The most direct flights. They do not count cities but unique countries. Interesting to see CDG as the top airport.

I count MCO as having 58, but a lot of these are seasonal (and the number is 57, excluding the one seasonal charter destination: Guatemala City).

Shouldn't be. IAH was always an internationally diverse airport, especially for being relatively inland.

And keep in mind that you're seeing it after the oil bust and after a bit of pulldown in its secondary Mexican network; when several international carriers/routes were nixed.

I've counted IAD as having 60 intl routes with about 10 seasonal. So posting statistics year old is the same as reading last month's printed version of local newspaper.

The biggest chunk of the destinations are still Mexico. I count 22 at the moment.

Yep, I knew that, I was bit surprised the higher that expected ranking due to the downturn in the local economy.

New York Metro and Miami Metro appear Twice on the list that's pretty impressive

New York Metro total: 210
Miami Metro total: 168

And the real total is probably higher factoring in the airports not on this list

I thought LAX would be higher, but I guess its the shear amount of heavies that make it seems so.

Paris -CDG ranks Top 1 for the number of international destinations served, well ahead of FRA (2) and IST (3), DXB (4), AMS (5).
LHR ranks only 6 in the list before JFK.

They are in a crisis mode now.

Not according to current data.

As usual, anna.aero did a good job by counting the number of destinations served non-stop from any particular airport.

Image

Now, one just has to deduct the domestic destinations in order to get the following result:
1. FRA 293-15=278
2. AMS 262-0=262
3. CDG 269-19=250
4. IST 273-35=238

EDIT: I almost forgot to link fhe full link from anna.aero:

Frankfurt with almost 300 destinations and Paris CDG with over 100 airlines lead global analysis of airport operations in S17

If it wasn't for DL, DTW would be 2nd on the list.

It's a different count : your count is by destinations, mine is by coutries served : if 10 cities in Germany are served from CDG, it counts as 1 country.

A little off-topic: We Icelanders always like to boast how much we do despite our small population. In that vein, I think KEF is very hard to beat in terms of destinations vs population. ;)

There are around 200,000 in the Reykjavik metro area, and 330,000 in the whole country. This summer, KEF has 94 international destinations (99 including charters). Beat that! ;)

It would be a lot higher if Northwest was still in the drivers seat.
the truth does matter, guys. too bad it's often quite subjective. the truth is beyond the mere facts and figures. it's beyond good and bad, right and wrong...
