Hubs you have flown through but not visited the city

Tue Aug 08, 2017 3:45 pm

Could not figure out a better way to title this topic so I hope it makes sense. I have traveled throughout the United States and have been to and visited every city that has a hub airport in the United States expect for Charlotte. I flown in and out of CLT a number of times but I have never visited the City of Charlotte itself and in fact have never even been outside the secure area. How about you? Are there hub airports (U.S. and/or international) that you have traveled through but have never visited the city that the hub serves?

Thank you for your responses.

I've flown through PTY, ORD, and GYE, but never been outside any if those airports.
Why is flying so expensive? And why is flying well so much more?

For hubs for me CDG is about it, but I have flown through AMA and ECP but not visited the corresponding cities. God bless WN.

For me it would be ORD, LHR, FRA, WAW and IST

Edit: I guess I could add ZRH to this list too, because while I technically was outside the airport, I was just changing trains in Zurich and never left the station.

My list used to be a little longer but I recently have been to Atlanta and Dallas. I think the only ones on my list would be DTW, CVG, CLT and ZRH.

Quite a few for me.
In the USA: ORD, DFW, IAH, SLC, and ATL. I guess I might have passed through Chicago and Atlanta on road trips as a kid, but I wouldn't say I've visited them since we never stopped there.
Outside the USA: ARN, CPH, BRU, and ADD. In fact I've never set foot in the countries of Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, and Ethiopia outside of those airports.

A few I would consider grey areas:
During a long layover, I have left LAX and walked to In-N-Out burger. That's pretty much the extent of my time spent in L.A. outside the airport. Have I visited Los Angeles?
I have both connected through FRA and flown home from FRA at the end of a vacation in Germany. We traveled around the countryside in the Rhineland region, then drove to Frankfurt, spent the night in the airport hotel, and flew home the next morning. I never really spent any time in the city of Frankfurt itself, so I don't think I can say I've really visited the city.

ATL, DFW, BOS, FRA, SVO. I might count IAH because I only had an overnight layover to Central America and stayed at an airport hotel. Didn't see any of the city besides the drive to/from hotel.

CDG, IST, RUH, DEL, BOM, ALG.

There are also some hubs, where I transferred before, but only visited the city on a later occasion: LHR, ZRH, SIN, DME

For me that's only Stockholm and Oslo and depending on how you look at it maybe also Dublin.

As for Dublin, I've landed there as my final destination but not to visit the city of Dublin. I've picked up a rental car at the airport and drove halfway through the country to the holiday home that I was going to. Visited a few towns in Ireland, but Dublin was not one of them. Closest I got to Dublin was the highway around the city.

It should be noted that for Oslo, I have been in the city of Oslo as a kid with my parents on holiday but back then we didn't fly there. The time I was at Gardermoen airport for a transfer I didn't visit the city of Oslo. Same is the case with Dublin by the way a few years later. Been in the city of Dublin when I wasn't flying and been at Dublin airport when I wasn't visiting the city.

FRA, more times than I can count. Also Nadi (Fiji) and Papeete (Tahiti). I will actually spend a few days in Fiji next month so Nadi goes off the list. I used to say the same for DFW, but then I had a need to stay in downtown Dallas for a meeting. I wish I had never left the airport.

I have the opposite "problem".

I used have a couple airports flown through but not visited the city (such as DFW and SLC), but now I have visited all the cities I have flown through (even counting the AS milk run flight I was a few years ago - ANC-JNU-SIT-KTN - I have visited all those cities).

Now I have a few airports that I have NOT flown to/through, but have visited the city. Currently on this list are CLT, PHL, DTW.

My list:

BOI on WN
TPE on BR
VKO on UN
LIM on LAN
BNE on QF
SYD* on QF - Had a long layover and took the train to Circular Quay to pass a few hours there instead of at the airport. Nice after a long TPAC from LAX but not sure that really counts as having truly visited Sydney.

I also have a flight booked on AA next spring with a connection in PHL that will be my first time to Philadelphia city or airport.

MEL, DFW, SLC, PHX, NRT, CNS.

Technically ATL - as in the time I visited the city I drove there, several years after I made a connecting flight at the airport. MDW is the opposite - I drove to Chicago and had to pick someone up from the airport. Also been inside BNA but never flew in/out of it.

SLC is my only one that I never left the airport.

Assuming Dallas counts as DFW. If I had to visit Fort Worth than add that one also.
I also am assuming EWR = New York City. I never visited NYC from EWR (I have only been there to connect) only from driving or LGA.

DTW depending on what we consider as visiting. I drove straight to Ann Arbor and never went into Detroit.

I had a connection in Louisville once on WN and never have been out of the airport. It isn't a hub obviously but it was a connection so I will list it.

New Orleans (not sure if you'd call that a hub, was back in 83 on either Delta or TWA I think)

Other hub cities I've travelled through I also just happened to have visited previously (Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong etc).

The interesting question though is what connection was routed via HAM?

Since I have that rule for myself that I go to the city and whenever I fly to the airport for the first time and only book flights that match that rule, there's really not a lot for me.

Places (not really hubs) I've connected at but didn't get out and have never been to on another occasion: ASP, BAH, POS, SDQ; soon: NBO. I usually connected via ADD or JNB and this time it's two extended connections at NBO but both during nighttime.
In Africa, there would also be a couple of airports that I didn't get off the plane since they were enroute stops.

Cheers from HAM

Only one outside the US:
AUH

Hahaha thanks for the laugh! :rotfl: I'm sure people have, it's just such a huge connection point for DL to just about anywhere that many itineraries route people through it. As the old saying goes, "When going to hell (or heaven) you make a connection in Atlanta."

Looking at my flight memory, and actually, my list is pretty short:

SEA
ATL
TPE
MUC
FRA (I sort of went through FRA, but didn't really see much)

I could technically maybe add IAD too. I have visited Washington DC, but every time, I have flown to DCA. Anytime I have been to IAD has been on a connecting itinerary. Same with ORD too — whenever I've visited Chicago, I've only flown into MDW.
