Sounds embarrassing to say that here, but I had a lot going on at the time other than remembering or writing that stuff down, but when I saw it I remember thinking, wow, that's different.

I only have one photo of it, at the departure gate at LGW. I can't see the registration or the wingtip so I am still trying to figure out which one it is.

GA flew both types in the 1990's according to the A.net database. I think it is a DC-10. The route was LGW - AUH - CGK.

I've never seen a L1011 for real. I did like reading the thread about Qantas and how they never purchased any though! Reasons why. History and hindsight. All that.

GA started operations from Jakarta to LGW on the 17 July 1980 initially with DC10-30 with the Boeing 742 taking over within a a few weeks, the MD11 was introduced on the route during the 1990's and then it was upgraded to a Boeing 744 by the late 1990's till it was stopped in 2003.

In the early to mid 1990's the Tristar was still a very predominant long haul aircraft at LGW so I'm sure there must have been at least one during your time at LGW although as you mentioned that you haven't seen one for real.

I would have loved to fly on all of these aircraft, but I never got the chance. Hell, I would have loved to be a pilot for all of those aircraft.

I had a look at the A.net database, and there were a lot more MD-11 flying around the year of my flight, 1993, than DC-10. I've yet to study the photo again, but the engine cowling paint or silver metal finish are different on each, so if only for a bit of fun detective work, this should help me a lot, and is the only thing to go on.

I am sure there must have been one or a few L1011 at LGW but I've no recollection of them there during my brief visit. LGW for me was only a departure and destination for long-haul to Australia. Also, in the days before digital photography, every photo was precious so therefore it was very limited, but I make up for it now!

By the way the incoming flight was a 747 and I would assume the 742 definitely yes. The photo I have is taken over the wing, the engines are silver metallic finish not painted (I found a photo in the database of a likely aircraft it would have been based on that).

Never flown DC10/MD11 and my only L1011 was when I was due to fly on a Monarch A300 from MAN to LPA and an Air Atlanta L1011 was used instead.. The A300 had been sat at the gate but was taken out of service due to a fault and the L1011 substituted....... I think the reg was TF-ABE

My first L1011 flight was when I was 5. I was so excited about it and I think that was what got me interested in planes. Even remember the flight number despite never keeping any sort of log.

I made one other L1011 flight with Peach Air RHO-LGW some time in July 1997 I think.

Flown a DC10 once ORD-LAS with UA.. Probably around Nov 2000.

Never flown MD-11.

My first and only flight on a widebody tri-jet was an MD-11.

As substandard and grainy as my photo was, including the angle taken, the overwing exits vs. the livery was the only real clue in the end.

Also, I came across the boarding pass which I still have.

L1011 back in 1989 from ATL to MCO on Delta
DC10 back in 2000 IIRC from IAH to LAX on Continental

DC-10: about 1978, LAX-DEV aboard a Continental Airlines DC-10. I know the year because the original Battlestar Galactica was on, and we kids watched it in Denver. I also flew a Continental DC-10 from London to Houston back in 1986.

MD-11: never, sadly.

L-1011: mid-90s. OGG-LAX. That Delta bird was clean, smooth, and nearly empty so we all had full rows to ourselves to sleep in. That was a sweet ride.

My first DC-10 was also my first international flight. Fuel stop required. My only MD-11 flight would also have one airport in common with my first DC-10 experience:

I missed out on the L-1011 and DC-10, unfortunately. I managed to log my only two MD-11 flights in 2014, when (as many people here will have done, no doubt) I flew AMS-YUL-AMS for that specific reason. Loved every minute of it.

Amazing what short hops 10's and TriStars were regularly used on back in the 70's and 80's, even 90's! The bulk of ATLMCO, ATLFLL, ATLTPA, and ATLMIA were on TriStars on both EA & DL. several flights regularly on ATLCAE, ATLCLT, ATLGSO, ATLDAB, ATLFMY, ATLTYS, ATLRDU, ATLMEM, ORDCLE, ATLJAX, MIAFLL, LAXSAN, LAXSFO, DENMCI! I surely omitting others but how cool to have those options! Thank you so much for this amazing thread!!!!
