Favorite/Least Favorite Aircraft (Looks/Experience)

Sun Aug 06, 2017 4:44 am

I thought this might be a fun thread. :)

Divided into two categories: looks, and experience. What is your favorite aircraft based on looks alone? What about experience from either as a pilot or passenger? Least favorite?

For me,
Favorite Looks: 757-300. There is no denying the beauty in the lines and overall design of the airplane. Very proportional and sleek.
Favorite experience: 747-400. Flying on the queen of the skies is an unforgettable experience, especially as we grow ever closer to the death of the 74. Overall beautiful airplane that, in my opinion, is the epitome of the age of jet transportation.

Least Favorite looks: 767-200. Looks bloated and just weird.
Least favorite experience: While I can't say I've ever had a horrible experience with any aircraft, I have to say CRJ-200. As a tall guy, I just don't fit well in them (at least united's).

Fav looks: MD-11/DC-10
Fav Exp: So far I love flying on the 757-200. I love that it's over powered!

Least fav looks: A380
Least fav exp: Hmm I don't have a bad experience with a specific aircraft, but I hate when you circle 10 times in a CRJ before landing at SFO, after 4 hours of flow.

Favourite looks: MD-11
Favourite experience: MD-11, just so much power!

Least favourite looks: 757, just weird looking. Enormously tall landing gear, stubby wings and that fuselage with different diameters ahead and aft of the wings. On the -300 you can even see the fuselage droop down in the far ends.
Least favourite experience: CRJ-900, horribly narrow fuselage.

Favourite Looks: Airbus A340-600 or BAe-146
Favourite Experience: Qantas 717 in business. Just a really simple, solid regional business experience.

Least Favourite Looks: Airbus A330 (or B787/A350) - the plain an boring twinjets of average size.
Least Favourite Experience: Britten-Norman Trislander.

I decided to stick with aircraft currently in common commercial service.

Favourite looks: A330
Favourite experience: B1900D, low altitude over the mountains and fjords of Canada's west coast. Takeoff like a rocket, stunning scenery, and an open cockpit where the pilots invited anyone to come up for a visit during cruise. The best!

Least favourite looks: A380
Least favourite experience: KLM 77W in economy comfort. At 10-across, it still felt crowded, and extra leg room seemed pointless. I wish Y+ meant a section of 9-across seats. That might actually be worth paying for. Forget the leg room. I'd pay extra not to be shoulder to shoulder with my seatmate.

Fav. Looks: Concorde.
Fav. Experience (from what I've experienced): AA 763 with the fully flat staggered seats - I gotta say I actually prefer the staggered configs to reverse herringbone, and the flight attendants we had to MXP the time I did this were super nice and we're with us on both the inbound and outbound. They were just super great and even in the 9 days between the inbound and outbound remembered all of our names (both directions were full, and I believe of the 28 business class seats, 24 or so we're filled by the same people both ways, plus same flight attendants. Just really nice.)

Worst looking: i don't like how the A300 looks at all.
Worst exp.: I'll give 2 answers 1 - any number of 737s from New York to Seattle and back. Just boring. 2- 2K (Aerogal) A319 UIO-GYE-SCY. Clueless FAs, no service, and despite it being a direct flight, they said there was a possibility we had to get off in GYE and walk through half the airport. They didn't know if we would have to or not. Just no idea! Turns out we did, which was actually pretty nice because I got to be inside a new airport that I had never been inside before, but still they had no clue if we could stay in the plane or not
Why is flying so expensive? And why is flying well so much more?

Fav Looks: 747 any variant
Fav Exp: A321 LOL went mental on my transcontinental flight when I realised they had an Ariana Grande album to listen to!

Least fav looks: A380, gosh it looks hideous. The A380plus takes the hideousness to the next level!
Least fav exp: 737-900ER, got excited when I misread the sticker on the outside as a 777-300ER, bitterly disappointed when I realised it was a freaking 737!

Best looks: 747-400
Worst looks: 737 series I find boring
Best experience: BA 772 LHR-DFW-LHR
Worst experience: American Eagle CRJ-200 on a stormy flight which was like being thrown about in the washing machine.

Favorite looks: L-1011
Favorite experience: 767 (any variant) for the low number of middle seats in economy.

Least favorite looks: 767 or 777 (all variants). They're just some of the most bland, generic looking aircraft in the sky. Actually you could say that about the A320 as well. At least the A380 has character, even if it's not the most attractive plane.
Least favorite experience: Any CRJ-200, just for the cramped feel of the cabin.

The E170/175/190/195 are fantastic. There's really no other narrowbody I'd rather fly on.

Favorite looks: MD-11
Favorite Experience: Embraer E jets. It is quite simply the most comfortable narrow body to fly on. It has the benefit of having no middle seats like other regional jets do but having the comfort of a mainline narrowbody.

Least favorite looks: A380. It's obese and ungainly.
Least favorite experience: The A320 family is just so horribly dull to fly on.

Favorite looks: 707: with its bullet nose, sharply swept back wings, four engines and the unique tail with the antenna--to me no other narrow body ever surpassed it looks wise (the 727 was pretty beautiful though, but then it had the same face as the 707 after all).
Favorite experience: 747-400 on CX upstairs in J. Felt like a luxurious private jet.

Least favorite looks: A380.
Least favorite experience: A330 on 9W on an overnight flight in Y. I always prefer a window seat but the sidewalls on this plane are very slanted and make me feel claustrophobic.

Favorite looks: DC-10, MD-11 and L1011 (past), A330-300 (current)

Favorite experience: AA 77W JFK-LHR in Y+. Nice legroom, great IFE and plane was less than 2 months old when I flew it. For regular flying any MD-8X/MD-90/717 especially in seats north of the wings as you barely hear the engines.

Least favorite looks: A380

Lease favorite experience: 757-300. Takes forever to board and deplane, riding in the back is quite a wild ride on takeoff and landing and you get jerked around quite a bit and watching the whole cabin just flex around longitudinally is just eerie. I don't believe there is such thing as a smooth takeoff or landing when you are in row 48 on a 753. Surprised the couple times I was back there I wasn't knocking heads with my neighbors.

Favourite looks: A350, MD-11, L-1011, 747-400
Favourite experience: A380 by a country mile, followed by the 787 in business class

Least favourite looks: CRJ-200
Least favourite experience: 787 in economy class... never, ever again unless if I have to get somewhere urgently and that's the only option.

Favorite Looks: Concorde, without a doubt.
Favorite experience: MD-80. Unless sitting in the rear part of the cabin. I like the 2-3 seating.

Least Favorite looks: Agree on the 767-200. Short and stubby, but lacking the "cuteness" of the A318 and 737-600.
Least favorite experience: 777 in 3-4-3 economy for 11 hours.

Favourite looks: Concorde (obviously) but among more standard stuff A330-200, those big wings make it look so graceful.
Favourite experience: A330-300 (never flown on the -200 so cannot say) as it was so comfy and smooth. (most exciting however was always the Trislanders into guernsey.

Least favourite looks... I don't know, the 788 and the A380 both look so squat on the ground but as soon as they get into the air it looks like they belong there.
Least favourite experience: B788, 9 abreast, squeeky hard seats, a red eye and I had a cold and it was February and I had spent 5 days in New Brunswick. Nothing directly to do with the plane but that's how the memory sticks.

Favorite Looks: MD-80
Favorite Experience: Toss up between the MD-88 and 737-700 (DL). Love those JT8D sounds, but man that 737-700 gave me the best take off/landing experiences of my life in EYW.

Least Favorite Looks: A380 (just too awkward looking to me)
Least Favorite Experience: CRJ-200. You break your neck to look out the window.

Favorite looks: Concorde - nothing else even close
Of currently operating models - 747-800i

Favorite experience - Upper deck 1st class on a UA 747-100
For coach, it would be aboard a DC-10 on the outer seats - loved the 2-5-2 layout if I was on the outside aisle seat. I'd iamagine the middle seat in the center section would have been awful though

Worst looks......I'd say A380 if it wasn't so darned impressive in size. With that in mind I'll say Q-400
Worst experience - 757-300. Lord it takes forever to board and de-plane that looooooog tube with only 1 aisle

Best-looking: 727. I've always loved the dramatic sweep of the tail.
Worst-looking: Don't really know that any plane truly looks ugly to me. But the CRJ-200 is very stubby-looking, so I'll call that my least-favorite.

Best experience: 717. By far. MD-80 is a close second, but the ventilation on the 717 is improved over the older MD80/90 models. And while my first E175 experience wasn't stellar, the rest of them have been very good. That may have been due to the operator.
Worst experience: The wretched Dash-8. I've had good experiences on other turboprops but the DHC-8 is just the worst POS in the sky. Every flight I've had to take on them has been miserable. They can't get parked fast enough.

Best looking: 757-300. So nice long and thin.
Worst looking: BAE-146. Just plain ugly.

Best experience: 787-8. You almost don't notice you're flying, so comfortable.
Worst experience: Fokker F-100. Not that it was bad, but there was no IFE and the aircraft was starting to show it's age.

Favourite looks: 757-200. So elegant. Long, thin, tall, cool cockpit...
Least favourite looks: DC-8

Favourite experience: Super 80, seat 29F with the loud engine.
Least favourite experience: CRJ-200. The windows are too low and small, some still have seats with ash trays.
